Hull Damage

When ships get hit will we see noticeable amounts of hull damage to tell they've been in a fight? Also, will this reduce a unit's ability to perform in combat as ships systems are being destroyed?

I imagine so.

I don't know how detailed they will go with damaged systems etc...

Maybe % damage can formulate a % efficiency in movement, weapons, shield regeneration etc.

You will see non-canned damage effects including flames, billowing fire, smoke, steam, electrical damage and more!

non-canned?

I think that means it won't be a specific pre-made alternate "damaged" skin or model that pops up when the ship gets over say, 50% damage, it will dynamically introduce the effects mentioned instead. I don't know if that means they will reflect the actual damage it has received but I think that would be a bit too much work.

it will come in a baggie , um no I think Al3xand3r has it answered on the spot. I am guessing all ships have some sort of "i've been shot here" detection system and then pick from one of a the damage effects mentioned by Craig, it makes battles more fun as you will rarely see the same hit ship A with weapon X and ship A will show damage type X.

Ooh, procedurally generated?

Huh, natty new quote thingy, don't say we don't notice.

There's a lot between non-canned and procedurally generated. Plus it's a spiffy term and he would have used it if that was the case.

whats really interesting (and my own personal favorite out of all this) is the inverse relationship between shield damage and shield resistance.
it still hasn't been answered if it is an exponential, linear or more complex relationship however...

the less information we get, the more i'm feen'n for a taste of a full treat on what this game will be offering

non-canned probably means procedural, i can't think of anything else it means...

How about simply added damage decals on the models and on top of that the effects mentioned? Really, I understand procedural is all the rage now because Spore is using it but meh, you really don't need it to have damage that seems dynamic. Plus I think we would have known by now if they employed that technology in any part of their game, it would be good advertising exactly because that term is so popular now...
