Ways in which this game can be won.

Ok, I've seen a lot of close up ship battles. I'm sure that these real time AI battles are a key aspect and will justify if a 4x in real time can actually work.

So this leads that one way to win the game is, with war.

How do you see victory through diplomacy? Can we win by other means? What can they be?

Yes the beta is real close so I suppose we'll find out, but as it is closer I have a feeling to raise my expectations. Or lower them, whichever way it turns out before the beta is released.

I might be wrong but seeing as this is a "rts" with "elements from 4x games" it will mostly be war that gives you victory and the rest features (forming alliances, treaties, whatever's included) will be there as tools of war again...

although victory through diplomacy... you know what I would like to see?
forcing someone else to break alliance and create civil war!

civil war between allies would rock but i'm affraid one might frown away and just quit the whole game. LoL only if they have a player status on their behavior. like say if the player is a habitual quitter or has honor on playing the entire game til the end result.

Well, if there's an alliance system I imagine you can break said alliance at any time... Which would lend to such situations, if you can deceive one of the parties involved into either forming a new alliance with you or thinking his ally is plotting against him...

It's still the assumption this is played persistantly on one map right? Then we may see a very interesting turn of events on a certain alliance which lasted a while but then ended up broken...Which begs to question how populated will a galaxy be with races as well as 'anomalies' of whatever persuasion.

Well, usually only 1 player wins in these games, so any alliance will not last until the very end. At best, only until the other opponents have been exterminated
