GETTING HELP for GalCiv II / Dark Avatar

1) IF you plan to switch between the game and something else a lot, run it in a window. You can do this via an option in the game's video settings. 

(2) The game will run in any high resolution your system will support.

(3) User created data files and preferences are in the my documents\my games\galciv2 folder

(3a) The Dark Avatar preferences are in the gc2darkavatar folder in the same place.

(4) IF you run into some problem please let us know the following things:

  • What OS you running?
  • Is it English or a particular language (Swedish, German, Japanese, etc.)
  • What video card do you have?
  • What kind of CPU do you have?
  • How much memory you have
  • Your Debug.err (located in the GalCiv II directory).
  • If you're running Dark Avatar it's in the galciv2\darkavatar directory

(5) If you run into a serious problem (i.e. game won't start, crashes, etc.) there is a debug.err file in your GalCiv II directory (galciv2 or galciv2\darkavatar depending on which you're playing). Post the contents of it here.

(6) UPDATE YOUR VIDEO DRIVERS.  We're serious about this. If someone responds to this post with a "Game occasionally CTDs, here's my debug.err" and there's a video driver from 2004 in it, we'll find you.   90% of the "bug" reports we get on serious issues end up being some guy who insisted he had the "latest drivers" and those "latest drivers" turned out to be 2 years ago.

(7) The game should run on pretty much any system that supports DirectX 9C.  YOU MUST HAVE DIRECTX 9C or later installed.

(8) There are some first generation Intel Extreme adapters that don't work with the game.  We're talking very old ones (i.e. <2003).  They don't work because they don't support True Type fonts in games. Nothing we can do. There's no work around other than to get another card.  Based on the beta, this shouldn't be an issue as nobody ran into it.

(9) DO NOT use this thread to ask whether the game will work on your system. If you have doubts, wait for the demo. If you can play any other recently released game, then you can run this.  (last time we put a thread like this up we had people with monster machines asking if they could run the game on it).

(10) IF THE GAME CRASHES ON YOU we want to know why. In Stardock Central in the "free stuff" area there's a program called Smart Exception.  Install that, run it, and if the game crashes, it will create a log that will tell us literally what line of code it crashed on.  Email [email protected] or [email protected] the file and we will take a look.  Don't forget to tell us what you were doing when it crashed to help us figure it out.

(11) IF the game is crashing when it saves (i.e. corrupted save game): Check your virtual memory settings.  You can do that by right-clicking on my computer, go to properties, click on the advanced tab, click on the performance settings, ciick on advanced, click on the change button in virtual memory.  Make sure your virtual memory is set to at least 2 Gigs.  The game won't use all that of course or anywhere near but we have found that those who run into this almost always have either no page file or very low memory.

(12) IF YOU ARE RUNNING ON WINDOWS VISTA. Be aware that the graphics drivers are still in a state of flux. Particularly the nVidia drivers (I wouldn't even consider using Windows Vista on an nVidia based machine until the driver situation gets better which I expect it to be by the end March 2007).

(13) NVIDIA 79xx series video card users, particularly those in SLI may experience freezing. If you do, turn on the hardware mouse cursor in the options. If that doesn't solve it, run the video card in single GPU mode.  Keep an eye on the nVidia drivers being updated and report any problems to nVidia.  I should know, I'm running two 7950's in Quad-SLI mode on my main machine.

(14) AMD DualCore. Make sure you have the latest bios for this if you run into any problems.

(15) The minimum resolution is 1024x768. If you aren't running at least that, the game won't work.

I just went back and deleted a bunch of well...crap my brother had on here that hasnt been used for about a year and when i open my hard drive it says, Free Space:59 GB is that enough space?

With so little virtual memory available, it's no surprise that it crashed that time. Chances are your virtual memory is set to let windows size it automatically (which it's rather incompetent at doing, generally), and for some reason it actually shrank it. You need to manually set it to a larger amount:

To increase your swapfile:
On the Desktop, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
Select the 'Advanced' tab.
In the 'Performance' section click the 'Settings' button.
Select the 'Advanced' tab.
In the 'Virtual Memory' section click the 'Change' button.
Select 'Custom Size' (probably for your 'c' drive), and set both 'Initial' and 'Maximum' sizes to 2048.
This will set up a static swap file of 2GB.
Then 'OK' your way out of the screens.
You may need to reboot the computer to make the changes effective, and you will be prompted to do so if necessary.

I'm going to feel folish to ask but can't figure out whats causing my crash. When I first installed the expansion, I was able to play the game but then it crashed. I was able to creat a game and play for a bit (maybe 40 rounds) The game then crashed. After which the game wouldn't start, crashs after it starts up from the menu. I get a brief sound but windows informs me the game crash and creats a bug report.

Your debug shows a problem with your video driver--try checking for newer ones from intel.com and your laptop manufacturer's website.

Looks like it didn't close completely, and you can only run one instance of the game at a time, so it won't start a new one. Rebooting your machine should sort it.

When this happens, does it then continue to happen every time thereafter during the same session? The issues you're encountering seem similar to those reported by some players as a precursor to the dreaded out of memory error.

It does appear to start once, then periodically happen for that same session. It does get worse and worse. I've gotten into the habit of just saving, quiting, reloading and going forward. Due to the annoyance of reloads, I don't like it...but am willing to do it.

Well, is there anything I can do to delay/prevent this? I've heard about the "heightmaps", but have NO idea what those are. I never DL'd them...would they help? What do they do?

Also, I have a LOT of VM, as you can see above. Does that matter? Too much?

Any other tweaks to look at? (I need a tweak-guide, dang it.)

They give DL/DA pregenerated planet terrains to use so that they don't have to generate them each game. They also use somewhat less memory, so you should be able to play longer without problems if you're getting OOM.

VM wouldn't make much difference here. The issue is that windows will only give the game 2gb of memory one way or another, and once it gets to the end of that, that's it.

AFAIK the devs will do what they can for DA in the eventual 2.0 update re OOM, but really the best solution is TA. A number of the new features double as memory-savers and I don't believe many if any players at all have had any OOM issues playing it.

i can play gal civ II regular game and i can play the twilight expansion just fine but when i try and play Dark Avatar i can get it to start and once i finish selecting what type of star system i want and click the next button ( the first next button to click) it crashes. dont understand why, read a bunch online and now i am out of answers. please help me

NOTE when i did finish installing the dark avatar game it gave me an error and said it was unable to launch exit window or something like that, but then it restarted my computer and i tried reinstalling 3 times and no luck. any help?

there doesnt show any updates for me. I would like to uninstall game and reinstall but stardock will not let me uninstall . it wants administrator access rights to uninstall. any ideas on how i can uninstall

The bit that tells Vista SDC needs administrator rights was broken in the last update, so for the moment you'll need to right click on your SDC shortcut and run it as an administrator manually.

I am trying to get Galactic Civilizations 2 to run and having problems.
I sent a message to Stardock tech support and still haven't heard back,
so I figured I would post here. This is a brand new retail copy that I
just purchased.

I will put m debug.err and prefs.ini files in the message below this
description. The problem is that I can launch the game with no trouble
at all. Before I disabled the intro movie, it played through with no
problems also. The game gets to the main game menu and then doesn't
register any mouse-clicks. It does seem to sense the mouse moving over
the buttons, but the clicks don't go through so I can't start the game.

I have tried using both hardware and software mouse with no difference.
I have adjusted the resolution in the prefs.ini file and tried windowed
vs. non-windowed mode as well. This is on a laptop, as you will see
from the specs below. It doesn't matter whether I use the trackpad or
an external mouse.

I also run into a problem with Stardock Central in that it does
recognize a mouse-click and then just freezes. I have no problem
running any other games or programs. Even Sins of a Solar Empire
installs and runs (though I haven't had a chance to actually play that
one yet).

Please help me get this game running.

Please Help!
My problem...
Messed up Backround Music
I am using DL, not DA
I originaly instaled it on my dads Dell running xp, and it worked fine.
Now i am instaling it on my new windows vista Median laptop.
It installs fine, and plays fine, but the sound is very messed up.
I have tried re-installing, but it hasn't helped.
I can play the music in Windows Media Player, but it does not play properly in game.
Please Help!!!
