Voice Chat - Any Information?

Will there be built in voice chat and if so how will it function.

I was wondering if there was any information about or any plans about in game voice chat? To me it would seem to be a no brainer for a realtime strategy game of the scale proposed with Sins. I can easily imagine having to first develop the "Technology" to enable FTL voice cummunication between solar system, then galaxies, etc. Perhaps also a "garbled speech" effect if you haven't researched the universal translator. Spy technology to listen in on others chats? Voice chat could become a HUGE feature if implemented properly!

Bandwidth an issue? Use P2P voice chat technology (which would add a "realistic" delay to chatting   )

Possible Technology Implementations:
FTL Radio Communication
Universal Translator (If you have it you can hear what the other person says, if you dont you get a garbled mess, making some chats one sided   )
Spy Satelites/Probes used to pick up others voice chats.
Organise battle tactics/plans with team members during a battle.
Set up informal diplomatic "agreements" outside of the "structured" game world agreements. (secret alliances?)
And more that dont immediately spring to mind.

So, as I asked originally, has any such information been hinted at by the developers?

I would say it's highly unlikely that we'll be adding voice chat to Sins. There are 3rd party programs available that can handle that quite well.

Thats a pretty interesting idea ,except Ill just use Teamspeak and ventrillo in teamgames. But this might work in FFA

One idea is to only be able to speak to ALL in a ffa. BUT inorder to speak privately to someone you need to research "secured line communications or build sumit or other etc. This then enables you to speak to Specific players allowing you to organise 2 on 1 attacks on other players.

Imagine if only 2 out of 6 people bothered to research this tech. Those people will be able to manuipilate the rest as they can organise who to kill. The others cant organise any attacks because their communications will be seen by everyone

Seems interesting but as Yarlen stated, there are programs that easily do this. With that, seems kind of like a waste of what they could put into the game and not.

Yes, there are many programs that can be used for voice chat. However none "interface" with the game itself or allow thier features to be changed/expanded on based on technologies researched. As a matter of fact, I have never seen a game do anything like that. It would be an interesting and unique feature to further help set this game apart.

However it is probably too late in the game developement cycle to start adding a feature like this, guess I'll just end up using teamspeak.

But if you start having limited communications as a part of gameplay then that would allow players to easily "cheat" by using a 3rd party voice program such as teamspeak.

every online multi-player team game i play , I use ventrillo with friends!

might be unfair to the other team, but they could be using a chat program too, and not have said anything.... and I hate losing due to poor communication with teammates....

Teamspeak/vent banter is what makes online games so much fun
