Suggestion: ANyone posting about GalCiv on MOO3 forum - STOP

There are more than a few posts about GalCiv appearing on the MOO3 forum and the game is getting pre-emptively slammed there largely because of the tension on the board and the amount of flaming going on. As a suggestion, anyone from this forum who is posting about GalCiv over there should probably lay off at least for hte time being. GalCiv stands for itself.

The MOO3 fanboys are really a rabid bunch.

Of course there's something to be said for ignoring the fanboys and letting disappointed players know about GalCiv. I know from personal experience that it was an incredible relief to discover GalCiv after the MOO3 release debacle.

I would support this suggestion. As a long time Moo fan I was lurking the board, but the level of hostility and the info I received there convinced me of two things:
1/ Dont register there
2/ Dont buy Moo for more than 5$ (you know, I cannot afford spending my money on mediocre games - former Easter bloc, you know ;)

And they said fan-boards are useless ;)

I mean Johns suggestion, you were way too fast for me ;). Disappointed fans have the advert for Galciv in box, is not it true?

I understand what you are saying about GalCiv getting slammed by MOO3 lovers. But look at the amount of people that learned about GalCiv through those posts on the MOO3 board. I would have never heard of GalCiv if it wasn't for a post on that forum. If people see GalCiv getting slammed on there and they do no investigation for themselves about the game, it's their loss. If you got a person very disappointed in MOO3 like I was, 10 to 1 they are going come here and get a much more positive outlook on GalCiv.

To Michael: And developing eternal hatred for everything connected with "IG" and "QS" letters. LOL
BTW, maybe connection of Stardock to IG may be a bit counter-productive from marketing point of view... in the moment... ;)

best slam-quote about moo3

"Well, we figured we could beat MOO3 by sandwiching some actual gameplay in between all the menus." The MOO3 interface is like an onion--once you peel away all its many layers, you're left with nothing but tears."

Well, forums exist for discussion, I don't see the point of not using them ;p
Jerks exist everywhere, on the web, in political parties, in governments, we have to do with. ;)

I've resisted posting there. It's hard. I've never posted once. But you know what? The fanboys there have been slamming Gal Civ from the start. It's nothing new. With MOO 3 crashing and burning the zealots are foaming at the mouth to new levels. It's a bloody cult over there now. Even their official moderators are joining in on the attacks. They're in their bunker now. Enemies everywhere.

It's true, the MOO3 fanboys there have really worked themselves into a fit. When the majority of people correctly point out that the Emperor has no clothes, those who have emotionally invested in fashion-design are bound to get just a tad defensive. ;)

I have frequented the MOO 3 forums because I am a MOO 3 player. I bought my copy and have been playing it.

I think there's plenty of room for them to coexist. Heck, I've also been playing the Rise of Nations beta and there's room for that too! ;)

Its actually a pretty good idea, all you guys would really be doing is trolling. If I came in here and talked about GalCivs flaws real or imagined, while simultaneously touting MoO3 do you think i'd get a warm welcome? I think theres plenty enough room for both games, i've been enjoying MoO3 and it looks like i'll enjoy GalCiv. The two really only seem close in the space aspect, otherwise GalCiv seems more Civ in space then MoO3.

As for letting dissapointed players know about GalCiv, give people some credit. I mean there was an advertisement in the box, right? Most gamers can check up sites for reviews and new releases, trolling one game on another games forums is just lame. GalCiv also has a benefit MoO3 doesn't in the reguard, its relatively unknown. People aren't expecting the next coming with GalCiv, or at least not as nearly as many as happened with MoO3.

Much like with Civ3 people got their hopes too high and coupled with a few bugs at the start... But anyway, i've rambled on too long, gamers need to quit feeling the need to choose sides. TBS gamers in particular, we don't have that many to even choose from.

There is nothing wrong with posting about another 4X game on antother site. It is ludicrous to insist it is 'trolling' simply because you are trying to point out another game in this genre, and explaining its strengths and weaknesses as opposed to other 4X games. I wouldn't advocate a 'neener our game is better than yours!' approach, but there is nothing wrong with intelligent discussion.

If they get their underwear in a bunch, who cares. There are those who post on the MOO3 site who have NOT purchased the game. So they will have NOT received any advertisement for GalCiv. And if they are there looking for a decent 4X game, posts about GalCiv are all good.

I've posted about SEIV and GalCiv on the MOO site, and I will continue to do so if it warrants intelligent discussion amongst fans of the genre. It was sad. One girl who didn't know about SEIV, but was dissapointed in MOO3, bought the game, and touted it. She wasn't rude.. she was just pointing out the SEIV site to fans that might want to try a different 4X game. The result? They snipped her post, telling her that 'advertisting' was 'generally' not allowed. What bull. They are simply peeved that their lovechild ended up such a pathetic mess. I did buy MOO3 and returned it. It is a mass of confusion, and poorly implemented ideas. It needs WHOLESALE patches, not to mention many mods, to make it playable and somewhat enjoyable. And I was a huge MOO2 fan. I was sorely dissapointed in the product I got.

As much as it pains all of us to see the GalCiv name besmirched, I don't think negative posts about GalCiv in the Moo3 forum will, in the final analysis, have much of an impact. Anyone who is motivated enough to go to a web forum is probabaly going to dig a little deeper by looking into the GalCiv forum and checking into online reviews. After all, these are strategy fans we're talking about here, right? People who presumably like to think? ;)

Frogboy if MOO3 was a 5 on a 1-10, what would you say the current Rise of Nations is? Their delay has me suspicious. I understand if you can not answer.

I won't like a MOO forum only saying
"WHooo, MOO is uber great" "Nope, UBER Uber great" ...
and a GC forum populated with
"Hooray, Rever this Game" ..."Yes, Brad is our Prophet !" LOL
What would be the point ? Now forums ARE HERE to promote confrontation and discussion about game strengths and weaknesses.
If I compare GC to SE4 on MOO forum I'm OT, not if I talk of Moo vs *others*. Same here. And doing this ain't trolling !
BTW I don't post to MOO3 forums, only at Poly's and here, but I do read them. :)

I would not have found out about GalCiv if it wasn't for Apolyton. Then again, it wasn't even in a forum. It was that "GalCiv Goes Gold!" link that brought me.

With that said, I think John has a good point. The MOO3 forums appear to be filled with much anger and resentment. A mere, innocent post about GalCiv at this time may be only adding fuel to the fire.

And yet, merely mentioning another game on a forum is bad? Hmmmmm ... this is a tricky matter. :notsure:

Heaping abuse on a beleagered forum owned by a beleagered association is unfair and unethical.

The owners of a forum have a right to designate the purpose of their forum and to restrict its content to that purpose. I have seen many comments by the Stardock people that the purpose of this forum is restricted to discussion of Galciv, and just Galciv. They have been very tolerant of the posts we have put up on this forum about other products, however, and I think we should respect that tolerence by keeping such discussion to a minimum.

There are many other sources of information about other games than just one forum. Simply using a web browser to find out about new TBS games should give a list that includes Galactic Civilizations, and I have seen lots of sites like gamespot and lidiumonline that are independent of the development companies that have published lots of reviews on lots of games.

I think the original post by John starting this thread has value. It is a simple request. Don't mention Galciv on QuickSiver's forums for a while. It is unfair. It is unethical. It is taunting (at least to the QS people). It is unprofessional. It is childish. etc. etc. etc..

And I don't think there is any further need to discuss this topic on this forum as well. It is not about Galciv. As it is, I think this thread is at risk of being deleted in its entirety by Stardock, and justifiably so.

The best selling point of any game is a right attitude among the members of the community. People know if the community has a right attitude and is working together those people will hang around and ask questions and get involved over time.

But 80% of the people(non-computer types) I know will bypass many sites because they are nothing more than a glorified fight. A lot of gamers don't want to listen to this stuff because its simply not informative or useful. They don't want a bunch of over exaggerated opinions of games punctuated by over-emotional and derisive remarks. But for the vocal minority, that is exactly what they are looking for.

We want to create a community that encourages everyone to come. We don't just want the 20% of the net-heads that will come anyway, but the clear majority that will hang around because we're civil to one another and try to be polite when expressing our opinions.

It doesn't mean we can't defend ourselves, but that we have to choose carefully when we fight. We have to get past allowing ourselves to get drawn in too deeply to fighting battles that have no productive outcome. Sometimes the best thing to do is to just stop posting and let the thing go.

If we can encourage non-net type people stay, then maybe they'll buy into drengin.net, or Galciv or object desktop. But if there's too much of a poisonous attitude the majority will avoid this place like the plague and that is going to be detrimental to Stardock's business...both here and on other sites. The best advertisement is a gamer with a good attitude.

I totally agree with tytan on his points.

Afterall forums are for clarifications, expressing opinions and discussions.

A forum where one can express opinions that are not entirely positive and discuss sensitive topics without getting their head chewed off, is in general, greatly appreciated.

One can defend by clarifying and not merely being argumentative.

I agree with the last two posts *in principle*, however in reality this will be difficult if not impossible to achieve.

You simple cannot have a public forum and tell people what they can and cannot talk about. People will talk about what they want. This is why certain governments simply do not allow public forums of any type. An electronic forum such as this has an advantage of a sort since moderators can edit and delete posts, but then that runs the risk of making the forum appear more like propaganda and not taken seriously.

I realize that this is just a game forum we're talking about here, but I find it fasinating that we are, in a way, struggling with the same types of "free speech" issues that society as a whole must struggle with.
