What is the internet to you?

or; thoughts on the information-age

I stumbled upon this website years ago, and I've been trying to find it again ever since, because in eleven short paragraphs, the entirety of the internet is summed up for me in one fell swoop:

The internet is shit.

Simple as that. I think this person makes some interesting points that are worth thinking about. And I can remember a time when the internet was something . . . I don't know . . . special. It's lost that specialness. In fact, it lost it years ago. It's replaced books with a computer screen, and actual research and work with bloody-freaking-wikipedia.

Oh well. To him, the internet is shit. What is the internet to you?

Ooh, I forgot to put my new byline for all my articles. (Written for the first time on Whip's invalid opinions thread)

Death to everyone and peace to all.

Many a time I've thought that the so called "primitive people" have got the right idea.

Interesting link, there...

Oh, I'd say it's shit to me...an all encompassing shit that contains many little bits of different shit.

Hmm...yep, that works.

The Internet is now, what it has always been since its inception. A conveyance of information. The type, veracity and value of the information is up to the author and receiver.

The size of the net and the number of citizens that now have acceess to it have grown incredibly which has resulted in a glut of information. Some useful, some interesting, most not to the general populace, but imortant to someone.

The internet for me is a mountain of information at my fingertips. I can check virtually any fact I want on the net.

Yup, me too. They had a life unencumbered by all this crapola.

Some useful, some interesting, most not to the general populace, but imortant to someone.

And it's silly what people think is important. Like freakin' Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The tabloid culture has grown to a creature of epic size and it sickens me.

the problem is, most of the time the information on the internet is crap. As someone who has to do a lot of research for school, I've found more times than I want to think problems, errors, propogated and proposed as fact. Oh well.

It started off as a great trip. Now, it's shit. This is about the only site I come to anymore. And I honestly think. I'm addicted to Wincustomize.

You know what. I think that site is shit. I mean, here is this person using the Internet to say the Internet is shit. Oh, the irony... NOT. Come on, without the internet, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Sure, like anywhere in the world, there is a lot of crap being spouted that a lot of people choose to believe (e.g. the cult of celebrity). But those of us who are smart, those of us who actually know how to think, don't believe everything we read, particularly on the internet.

I choose to be here because it is a great communication tool and gives me access to people from around the world and a marvellous array of opinions. Oh, yeah, and heaps of free porn

True, true. I am grateful for the internet, because it's gotten me heaps of new friends all over like you, Mark. Or Joe. Or Sally, or Emilia, or Amanda, or Donna. Or stay in decent touch with my brother, Peter.

But. I do think that that site makes some good points. The internet makes us give up many of the things we should enjoy for staring at the screen.

All the internet means to me is I'm sitting here looking at crap when I should be in bed...

If I had a button with an EMP attached, I'd press it.

And you'd be hated for the rest of forever for taking away the porn of the world.

Yeah, I'd say shit sums it up nicely.

And if one more moron references a Wikipedia entry as fact or proof of something, I'm going to hunt them down and strangle them with their mouse cord. Don't these idiots understand that these entries are written and/or edited by God-knows-who? Hardly an authoritative reference.

Yep, it's shit alright.

The best part is . . . I like to take online classes as part of my university studies, because it decreases the amount of time I have to be on campus (giving me more time for . . . amourous liasons . . . or work, usually work) and for one of my last ones, we had to write these nasty big papers on X thing we chose. Most of the students used Wiki as their main source of info. I, hating the Wiki, turned to my textbooks, other books I owned, or went to the library. Come on. Let's get our priorities straight.

Strangle away, Mason, strangle away.

I'm not sure what to think about the internet, yet/anymore...
I'm on in the morning, off at night. Otherwise I'm asleep.

Sometimes I go outside. Sometimes. Mostly I don't.
Sometimes that's so scary I almost piss myself.
Mostly I don't give a shit.
Peace would be good.

If I were the professor I would have failed every single one of those papers for lack of credible research.

But she won't, because "that's just what you do these days". Wiki has its uses (i.e. quick looking up something like somebody's death date or where they were born) but is not to be trusted.

I avoid it like the plague.

My profs ban Wiki...not one of them actually accepts it as a good resource, and it's really not. Most only allow a few internet resources...some sources HAVE to be textbooks, magazines, scholarly journals, etc.

Haha, interesting that site you linked!

Like Elie said, information and entertainment! And what Maso said too, except the porn part for me!!

I wish that were the case in my online classes. But they're for the lazy kids, after all . . . (I'm in my element)

I don't know, I feel differently about this. I'm not giving up anything. In fact, some of the information I've found on the internet has actually added to my enjoyment of other activities.

I guess the bottom line is what the individual does with it. Using Wikipedia, for instance, as a single source of information is just plain lazy and ultimately a waste of time and energy.
