Emotional Rescue
Album: Emotional Rescue
Year: 1980
Mick Jagger wants to save his crush from a sour relationship in the apish “Emotional Rescue.”
Flattering guitars open the single, setting a courting tone. In the first verse, they’ve had several conversations about dating. She told him it can’t happen. She’s with a guy who controls her finances and every move. She didn’t realize he would have a stranglehold on her life when she moved in with him. He asks her if he can get involved or make a compromise, insuring that they can be together sometime in the future. He says he thinks about her all the time and can’t be without her.
In the pre-chrous, he says he’s been depressed ever since she cut him out of her life, other than to keep from getting in trouble. He tells her she can leave him. She doesn’t have to stay with a jerk.
In the chorus, he says he will be as reliable as the moon rising to the sky every night. He will help her with anything she needs. He will listen to all her problems and solve them.
In the first bridge, he exclaims he was weeping all last night, thinking of how trapped she is.
In the second verse, he says she believes she’s special to him in order to get through the day. It’s how she justifies his behavior.
The second chorus is sung again.
In the third verse, he said he had a series of dreams where they were lovers. However, tears sprang to his eyes, knowing it was in his dreams where she would only be his. He vows to steal her away from her current boyfriend.
In the final section, he says he will sneak into the house and take her away. Her boyfriend will never even notice he was there. He thinks she’s with the wrong man and is meant to be with him. He promises to be the perfect man in her life.
Jagger sees his crush at least once a day. She lives next to him and is usually outside, admiring the roses or sitting on a chair, enjoying the sun. He then comes over and they talk about anything. He has found out that her boyfriend is hardly ever at home and is told to stay there until he returns. She has to have his permission for nearly everything. For a while, there was something going on between them, but she stopped it before it became an affair.
Jagger’s quixotic, concerned falsetto is put-on and plastic. He cares for her and is willing to do anything for her. But once his normal vocals come back, they are ravaging and biting. It reveals he has control issues like her current boyfriend. His usual vocals give the song its dimension but the falsetto crashes it. It doesn’t fit the song.
The gallant arrangement covers the notes in its designer jacket, hiding the madness with a welcoming aura.
The slightly twisted “Emotional Rescue” is sullied by a misplaced falsetto.

“Is there nothing I can say/Nothing I can do/To change your mind/I'm so in love with you/You're too deep in/You can't get out/You're just a poor girl in a rich man's house.”
In the pre-chrous, he says he’s been depressed ever since she cut him out of her life, other than to keep from getting in trouble. He tells her she can leave him. She doesn’t have to stay with a jerk.
“Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh/Yeah, baby, I'm crying over you/Don't you know promises were never made to keep?”
In the chorus, he says he will be as reliable as the moon rising to the sky every night. He will help her with anything she needs. He will listen to all her problems and solve them.
“Just like the night, dissolve in sleep/I'll be your savior, steadfast and true/I'll come to your emotional rescue/I'll come to your emotional rescue/Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh.”
In the first bridge, he exclaims he was weeping all last night, thinking of how trapped she is.
“Yeah, the other night, crying/
Crying baby, yeah I'm crying/Yeah I'm like a child baby/I'm like a child baby/Child yeah, I'm like a child, like a child/Like a child.”
In the second verse, he says she believes she’s special to him in order to get through the day. It’s how she justifies his behavior.
“You think you're one of a special breed/You think that you're his pet Pekinese.”
The second chorus is sung again.
“I'll be your savior, steadfast and true/I'll come to your emotional rescue/I'll come to your emotional rescue.”

“I was dreaming last night/Last night I was dreaming/How you'd be mine, but I was crying/Like a child, yeah, I was crying/Crying like a child/You will be mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, all mine/You could be mine, could be mine/Be mine, all mine.”
In the final section, he says he will sneak into the house and take her away. Her boyfriend will never even notice he was there. He thinks she’s with the wrong man and is meant to be with him. He promises to be the perfect man in her life.
“I come to you, so silent in the night/So stealthy, so animal quiet/I'll be your savior, steadfast and true/I'll come to your emotional rescue/I'll come to your emotional rescue/
Yeah, you should be mine, mine, whew/Yes, you could be mine/Tonight and every night/I will be your knight in shining armour/Coming to your emotional rescue/You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine/You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine/I will be your knight in shining armour/
Riding across the desert with a fine Arab charger.”
