Bye Bye Bye
Album: No Strings Attached
Year: 2000
JC Chasez is fed up with his insensitive girlfriend in the straightforward “Bye Bye Bye.”
Decisive strings and assertive drums open the single, setting a scorned tone. In the intro, N Sync say the song’s title.
In the first verse, he has decided to break up with her. He’s thought about it for some time. Yet again, she forgot today she made plans with him and went out with her other guy friends instead. It’s going to lead to an argument. She will shout that she hasn’t seen them in awhile and they can always see other tomorrow. He thinks of how he defended her when his friends told him they saw her flirting with someone else. He even stayed with her after she was indifferent to his problems with classes. It’s best for them to go to their separate ways.
In the pre-chorus, he no longer he can be minimized and taken for granted by her. He wants to be rid of her as soon as possible.
In the chorus, he says he won’t take her excuses or be used as a status symbol to show off in the school hallways. He says that she won’t want anything to do with him anymore. However, her behavior is insulting. He doesn’t want to make her angry, but he can’t be with her. She may be shocked, but it’s the truth. He’s leaving her.
In the second verse, Justin Timberlake takes over the vocal duties. In it, he asks her if she really likes him as much as she says she does. Knowing he won’t get an answer, he says if she can remember one considerate thing she had done for him. He explains he devoted an entire six months of life to her and received nothing but heartache in return. He’s realized she’s not his dream girl, like he’d thought.
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the bridge, Chasez says he’s worth the work to get to her to talk to him. He doesn’t want to be associated with her at all. He’s going and nothing can she says can stop him. He doesn’t want to be known as a passive boyfriend who won’t stand up for himself.
The final section is sung to close the single.
From sixth grade through tenth grade, Chasez had a huge crush on his girlfriend. He would see her and continue to stare, hoping their eyes would meet. They had a class together and after gathering his courage, he started to talk her. He found her to be as friendly and sweet as he had imagined. He asked her out and they began to date. Their relationship was quickly shot a couple months later. She hung out with her guy friends, who he knew were all flirting with her. He also realized she liked lots of male attention and no matter how much he said he loved her, it wouldn’t be enough.
Chasez’s resolved, matter-of-fact vocals are amicable. He waited until he was absolutely sure the relationship wasn’t going to work before he broke up with her. However, he at least wants to end it on friendly terms. Timberlake, though, is distant and resentful. He disliked being ignored and wants to brush her off, like she did him. Their good-cop, bad-cop deliveries do set an even tone. For Chasez, he’s building his confidence before the confrontation. Then, Timberlake lets the bitterness out.
The diligent arrangement, with its gummy strings and caramel drums, follows the teen pop recipe precisely. It's solid coating is perfectly made.
The enjoyable “Bye Bye Bye” is a highlight of the early 00s bubblegum era.
