Album: Unpredictable
Year: 2005
Jamie Foxx promises exciting sex in the squalid “Unpredictable.”
Lurid keyboards open the single, setting a scuzzy tone. In the intro, Foxx says women have ordinary lovers. They stick to a single position and never try anything different. Foxx says he has thought of another way to attract women.
In the chorus, he tells his girlfriend to lie on the bed. He says it won’t be their routine lovemaking. He’s been doing some reading and wants to try new things tonight. He says she has to trust him and go along with it. He’s aiming to give her at least a couple dozen orgasms. He assumes she’s open to absolutely everything.
In the first verse, Foxx says they are truly one person when having sex. He rattles some nonsense about the alphabet, which he says she will understand it later. He tells her he’s not into doing the normal positions. He tells her they are going to do every position and maybe think of some.
The chorus is sung again.
In the second verse, he says their Friday nights are a dinner at a chain restraurant and then to the latest movie that weekend. He says tonight, he will give her oral sex and film it. He asks if she’s all right with it and she answers yes. He boasts that her other boyfriends wouldn’t have thought of such a kinky idea. Eventually, she will find out how freaky his imagination actually is.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, Ludacris raps he’s an impulsive guy. He will start making out with his girlfriend on the pool table and then lead her to the kitchen, where they sleep together on the floor. He says he’s going to change her standards for excellent sex after being with him in a couple seconds. He says he’s a stress reliever and brushes off people who don’t find sex all that thrilling. He says they are boring lovers. He says he’s likely to wake her up at 3:30 a.m. and go at it. In the morning, she will giggly and tingly.
The chorus is sung again to close the single.
For Foxx, sex is a performance. It’s something to be talked about and acclaimed. Love doesn’t even factor into it. He wants to dazzle and impress, not express any feeling towards her. He’s made the decision to perhaps go farther than she may feel comfortable with and makes her agree. It’s as though his girlfriend is his toy.
His oily, prideful vocals are indistinguishable and simple. It’s hard to believe he won an Oscar for imitating the legendary Ray Charles or that his singing was considered phenomenal. While he may think of himself as a macho, experimental lover, he’s actually desperate as he pressures her to do what he wants.
Ludacris, who usually is able to prop up and save some singles, is at a loss. He has energy and attitude but is limited.
The beat moves too slow and holds him back. He has energy and attitude but is limited.
The brute R&B arrangement slides its slimy notes up and down the rhythm, lashing its tongue and smashing into its mouth.
The ugly “Unpredictable” makes sex as appealing as fuzzy bread.
