Music Review: Faith Hill "Breathe"

Faith Hill

Breathe
Album: Breathe
Year: 1999

Faith Hill takes in a private moment with her lover in the devoted ballad “Breathe.”

A fond guitar and cozy strings open the single, setting a chivalrous tone. In the first verse, she says she gets goose pimples on her arms whenever she cuddles with him. The rays of the sun highlight the content expression on his face. His fingers rub her shoulders and he gives her a kiss on the forehead. She can’t believe she was so lucky to find him. She ceases to worry about the little things like she always does. When they are together, it seems as though they exist. They are oblivious to their surroundings and concentrate on each other. The ticking of his heart resounds in her ears.
“I can feel the magic floating in the air/Being with you gets me that way/I watch the sunlight dance across your face and I've/Never been this swept away/All my thoughts just seem to settle on the breeze/When I'm lying wrapped up in your arms/The whole world just fades away/The only thing I hear/Is the beating of your heart.”

In the chorus, she can feel his chest rise and fall. She puts her arms across his chest and let herself slip away into him and become one with him for an hour. Her love for him is unlike anything she ever felt before. It’s powerful yet tender. It’s the ideal and what it’s intended to be. They don’t need to keep score of how many times the other said “I love you.” They can be silent and relax in their intimate time.
“'Cause I can feel you breathe/It's washing over me/Suddenly I'm melting into you/There's nothing left to prove/Baby all we need is just to be/Caught up in the touch/The slow and steady rush/Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be/I can feel you breathe/Just breathe.”

In the second verse, she says she hasn’t loved anyone in a long time. She had stayed away from any lasting relationships after her ex-boyfriend neglected her. She couldn’t trust men for a while. However, she finds herself letting him in and telling him her secrets, which she would’ve been scared to do before. It’s not something they have to remind the other about either; it’s what they mutually feel.
“In a way I know my heart is waking up/As all the walls come tumbling down/I'm closer than I've ever felt before/And I know/And you know/There's no need for words right now.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the final section, the latter half of the chorus is sung and part of the first verse.
“Caught up in the touch/The slow and steady rush/Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be/I can feel you breathe/Just breathe/I can feel the magic floating in the air/Being with you gets me that way.”

When she first met her boyfriend, she accepted his dinner date without hesistation. Usually she would question it, thinking she might’ve missed some red flag and was getting caught up in the crush. However, she knew he was different. He was patient and waited until she was ready to talk about her past relationship. He consoled her when she opened up, letting her know he wouldn’t shut her out. Now, it’s a romance she’s always dreamed of happening in her life.

Hill’s wholehearted, enamoured vocals are strong and peaceful. The closeness between them is indissoluble and two years later, their bond is still as stable as it was then. It’s a love that was better than she imagined.

The mesmerized arrangement succumbs to the beauty of the moment, stirring the heartstrings in its adoration.

The lush “Breathe” is a lovely, once-in-a-lifetime ballad.
