R. Kelly visualizes reaching every dream he has in the watery ballad “I Believe I Can Fly.”

Aspirational strings and a virtous keyboard open the single, setting an ingenous tone. Kelly says he thought his life was over. His problems seemed neverending and unsolvable. Getting through the day was tedious. However, he met a lovely woman who gave him the support he wanted and helped him through. She has promised to stay and not to leave him.
“I used to think that I could not go on/And life was nothing but an awful song/But now I know the meaning of true love/I'm leaning on the everlasting arms.”

In the pre-chorus, he says she has given him confidence to try. She told him to have faith and the rest will follow.
“If I can see it, then I can do it/If I just believe it, there's nothing to it.”

In the chorus, he says he knows whatever he wants to be is within his reach. He works on it all day, every day. He envisions himself acing the interview and getting the job.
“I believe I can fly/I believe I can touch the sky/I think about it every night and day/Spread my wings and fly away/I believe I can soar/I see me running through that open door/I believe I can fly/I believe I can fly/I believe I can fly.”

In the second verse, he explains he was close to having a nervous breakdown. Nothing was going right. He was alone and the stillness of his room caused him to cry. It magnified every trouble. He knows he is capable of extraordinary things and must do them to complete his life. However, he realizes he has to ambition to begin.
“See I was on the verge of breaking down/Sometimes silence can seem so loud/There are miracles in life I must achieve/But first I know it starts inside of me, oh.”

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, he adds that he has self-confidence and won’t back off from rejection.
“Hey, ‘cause I believe in me, oh.”

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the final section, he says it will be easy. All he has to do is be dedicated and he will make it. The holier-than-thou choir affirms his point of view.
“Hey, if I just spread my wings/I can fly/I can fly/I can fly, hey/If I just spread my wings/I can fly/Fly.”

Love saved him for a life of sobbing and mediocrity. All it took was a kiss and he knew he could do anything. Suddenly, he had the desire to be his old self again and find the elusive end of the rainbow. Life, for him, will now be an easy ride from now on.

Kelly’s pious, lordly vocals are preposterous and transparent. He needs to rationalize his cutthroat attitude with a sad story. Except its vague and has holes (his lover dropped less than halfway through and never mentioned again).

The gullible arrangement swallows the syrupy strings with gusto; later heaving the bull it was fed.

The daft “I Believe I Can Fly” harbors its delusions, expecting to be believed without question.
