Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's Platforms & Services Division has written a blog about the new sounds that have been added to Windows Vista.  He explains the reasoning behind the new sounds, and provides some interesting "facts" about the sounds.

"Sounds are obviously an important part of how people interact with their PC.  The idea is to use your ears to get information from a sound without even thinking about it.  For example, certain sounds on our PC tell us when we have a new email or instant message."

I changed my Xp GUI files with a program on my computer a few months back to Vista settings, which included new sound files and such, and the new startup sound would not be my first choice. It's more of a wailing woman than an angel.

However, the Aero is very nice. I'm not sure if Vista will do this(but it probably will), but by holding ctrl+alt+shift and clicking the start bar and widows you have open, you can change the transparency of the window!

The transformation pack is here:

It's very important that you do not click ANYTHING after starting this. There is one message that confirms your OS type that is part of the gui changer, but do not do anything else. Even clicking on any windows that come up will ruin your computer. Also, shutdown your virus scans and spybot and things of that nature. You might also want to create a system restore before you change the files. Otherwise it's prefectly safe!

With so many 'DO NOTS' involved, I have considerable doubt in trusting the "Otherwise it's perfectly safe" assurance at the end.....

Besides, when Vista trials are freely available from MS, why on earth would anyone wanna stick an imposter transformation pack over XP....also a WC member strongly advised against it after it carboshed his PC, so not really a good idea.

Really doesn't sound like it to be honest.  I went through the "making XP look like Vista phase" like many others, but I did it all with ObjectDesktop.

Think Bash2Cool was one who said he had issues with the Vista Transformation pack messing up XP's settings and ended up having to uninstall it....but I recall someone else saying there were problems even after uninstalling it, XP was not fully restored and a clean install was necessary to regain control....

Seems a bit reminiscent of StyleXP....hacks system files and don't put 'em back. No thanks, Vista RC2 is quite stable and gives me all the Vista-ness I need right now.

BTW, thanks for the info, ID...after reading an article that linked to what were obviously bogus Vista sounds, I've been rather interested in what would eventuate.

I think Vista Transformation Pack is kinda..well..unsafe. I installed VTP 5.0 on my previous PC and guess what? It gave me BlackWorm and prettymuch entirely destroyed my XP installation. So, I backed up my files by taking my HD out and putting it in another computer with antivirus on it (too bad I didn't have it on my extra PC...) and copied my important files to the other HD, then reinstalled XP on the extra PC. GRRR. I hate reinstalling XP. It takes too long. That's why I dont use VTP anymore. I just use the official pre-release versions that Microsoft supplied me

You're not alone in that conclusion....read an article condemning VTP as being the most poorly designed and OS-harmful software ever designed. Can't remember exactly where cos I visit so many (PC related) sites, but I think it was the Systinternals guy who recently teamed up with MS.

Point is, if a PC guru says it's unwise to install VTP, that's more than enough for me to avoid it like the plague......and why bother anyway, the Vista test versions provide the better Vista experience and are more stable.

I read somewhere that VTP6 is supposed to fix a lot of things that went wrong with 5/5.5, etc. But somehow I have a hard time believing that..............
