JoeUser: Noticing a Performance Improvement?

We did a little bit of clean-up work on a few of the databases connected to JoeUser today.  Here at the office, it feels like the site has been snappier in pulling up articles.

How does the site speed "feel" to everyone else now?  Were you even noticing any slowness the past few weeks?

Are you kidding? The slowness was slowly killing me! I wondered if it was my computer, both at work and home. So I cleaned up the cache and all. But yes, I did notice. And thank heavens there's a big difference cause I can click and something comes up right away! Yeah Mike!

I was getting a lot of server application errors until today. It does seem to be a bit more responsive now.

Thumper tweaked the forums a bit now. Those should be faster now. We're looking into the "Service Unavailable" errors too.

Would you be able to restore my old articles please?  I wrote a week and requested that,  I didn't know you guys were busy working on JU.  Would appreciate that very much.  Thank you.

As I navigate the new forum,  I slowly am getting used to it and enjoying the new stuff too.

while i haven't had any problems with speed on this machine nor any of the several others i occasionally find myself using, since the new format has been in place there've been at least 6 occasions on which i was seemingly unable to post comments. each of those had one thing in common with the others in that they were all relatively long (all were at least 4 paragraphs long; some included pasted quotes from external sources). i finally managed to upload a few of them by initially posting only the first paragraph and adding the rest in stages using the edit command. at least twice i wound up with double posts even tho i did my best to check before starting over by closing my original browser window and opening a new one as well as clearing my cache, etc.

i don't recall having had this problem prior to the new format.

it wouldn't be quite so annoying if it were possible for one to edit his or her own comments at all times rather than only when the comment in question is the most recent.

it ain't the end of the world, obviously, and i sincerely thank yall for all the stuff you've done already.

To everyone asking about misc site and forum problems:

Currently, we're not actually working on JoeUser specifically. We're preparing to launch a new version of WinCustomize.com and doing optimizations to databases that the two sites share (accounts, articles etc...). JU is on the list of site projects for early next year (at least that's the plan so far...). At the moment, we don't have spare net dev resources since everyone is hell-bent on getting WinCustomize finished and launched. As resources free up, we may be able to take a look at JU glitches in advance of the larger site project (maybe... no promises). All I can say for now is sit tight with the current wonky behavior of the site. Things WILL get better, just not immediately.

Also, we'll be doing additional tweaks to the shared databases, so hopefully over the next few weeks, articles and forum posts will load faster. We've already seen significant improvements here and on the WC side from the few simple tweaks Jeff did yesterday.

When are you seeing the slowness? It's possible you're running into problems when we're doing some after-hours database jobs.

Locking replies once they are no longer the most recent I *believe* is an intended design. This prevents people from getting into a heated debate, saying something nasty, and then when called on it, going back to edit it and saying "What are you talking about? I NEVER said that... show me proof I ever said that!" We've seen it happen with blog articles in the past many times.

It does seem to load a bit faster. Last couple of days, the pages load a bit weird (the fonts were off), now that weirdness is gone. Many thanks, JU staffs.

So far this morning I lost an article, I rewrote it and it finally worked, I have not been able to post comments on several blogs that I know I am not blacklisted, I have got several page not available notices, several server not available notices.
yep Joeuser as usual wonky, stubborn.

 

Yet I am still grateful for Joeuser being here.

A common performance tweak it to change the size of the internet cache to about 30MB. You can do this via Internet Options control panel.

I've been having a very hard time loggin in during the wee hours, usually around 4-5 am, eastern time. I get 'server unavailable' messages a lot.


I wonder if this happens when they updat the various "scores".

To me sometimes it seems a bit "snappier".

Its going to be a lot better when Stardock finds the time to really maintain JU.

I definately appreciate any work you guys do, and thanks for working on the DB a bit. Noticable or otherwise, its an improvement!

I too have noticed the site is faster. Thanks for your hard work, Thumper.

I still can't create a blog group, though. I'm wondering if the error message I get (JoeUser.com is undergoing some changes to it's database. Please try back again soon) has anything to do with the work you guys are doing to optimise the databases.

Nope... the "database is busy" message you're getting is something else. It's a bug that's plagued the site for some time and makes it hard for new users to create blogs (or in your case a blog group). The changes Thumper has made so far have been very minor, and haven't gotten in the way of the normal operation of the site.
