Music Review: Paris Hilton "Nothing In This World"

Paris Hilton

Nothing In This World
Album: Paris
Year: 2006

Paris Hilton steals another girl’s boyfriend in the haughty “Nothing In This World.”

A preening guitar and hubristic synths open the single, setting a vain tone. In the first verse, she “da-da’s.” She’s apathetic to the conversation she’s having with a friend and has decided to stare at the people walking down the hallway. She sees a male acquaintance of hers, hand in hand, with his girlfriend. She smiles at him, making sure to touch her neck. He keeps his gaze on Hilton and doesn’t break it until she’s no longer in his view. After school, she asks him if he’s tempted to kiss her.
“Da-da/Da-da, Da-da, Da/Da-da, Da-da, Da-da, Da/So I was thinking to myself when you passed me by/“Here’s what I like”/And you were with somebody else but you can’t deny/That’s me in your eye/Do you know/What it’s like/When it’s wrong/But it feels so right?”

In the chorus, she says they will sleep together tonight. She will be able to please him in ways his girlfriend can’t. She says they can’t avoid what they feel any longer. They won’t be stopped by morals, parents, or friends.
“Nothing in this world can stop us tonight/I can do what she can do so much better/Nothing in this world can turn out the light/I’m gonna make you feel alright tonight/Da-da, da-da, da-da, da, tonight/Da-da, da-da, da-da, da, tonight.”

In the second verse, she tells him that although they like each other, they aren’t meant to be together. He knows if they were to date, their lives would be turned upside down. His parents would tell him she’s materialistic and all about herself. Her parents would tell her she could find someone with prestige. He comes over her house and watches a movie with her. During the movie, he would turn and grin at her. She says guys usually are nervous around her. Finally, they kiss and eventually, sleep together. She tells him he will feel somewhat guilty for cheating on his girlfriend but content to have a chance to be with her.
“Baby, you and I, we got what will never be/You know I’m right/So tell me what you’re waiting for when you’re here with me?/Most guys would die/You should know (you should know)/What it’s like (what’s it like)/When it hurts (when it hurts)/‘Cause it feels so right (‘cause it feels so right).”

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she says she has a secret, one he will enjoy. She tells him it’s not the obvious thought on his mind. It’s that she’ll be willing to be the other woman.
“I gotta tell you somethin’/It’s somethin’ that you just might like/No, it’s not the same thing/Yeah, you’ll learn I’m not too shy/You and I, we can do this thing tonight.”

The chorus is sung twice to close the single.

The guy and her have had a thing going on and off for about a year. They talked occansionally but never hung out. However, something was between them. She had liked him for a long time and goes after him, despite him having a girlfriend. To her delight, he responds to her advances and takes her up on offer for a date. She says it’s a forbidden love, but it doesn’t have to be one night.

Hilton’s shifty, aloof vocals are self-serving and petty. She doesn’t care if she hurts anyone. She just wants the guy and that’s all that matters. The fact that he has a girlfriend motivates her. Her vocals are also computerized, covering every mistake in pitch with a noticeable blob of synth.

The sweet arrangement bubbles over in giddiness, whirling the frothy synths and bouncy guitar into a lovable tizzy.

The homely “Nothing In This World” has such a cute melody but it’s tarnished by Hilton.
