Monthly Charge instead of one time charge

Hello,

I was just curious if anyone at TG.net had considered charging a flat fee every month that gave one credit instead of the $70 for 10.  I would sign up if you charged $10 a month for one credit or something instead of your current system.  That way I could save credits up for a month or two if I wanted a game that cost more than one credit or something.  I currently give Real Arcade $8.00 a month for their silly little puzzle games that I'm never happy with.  I would gladly switch to your site even if you charged say $15 a month or so.  I probably won't be able to sign up the way it is now, although I would really like to.  Just a thought.  Thanks.

Well, there is an advantage with the current system: if you don't want to use your token, your spare them for a later use with no real time limit. While if you pay a monthly fee, you may feel you are forced to pay for something you don't use. And don't forget that some games cost 3, 4 or 5 token. I am pretty sure that people that want these games prefer to pay them immediately than waiting x months to have the required token

i dont see any reason for a monthly charge. tng is a shop not a mmorpg or something.

Jamie, have you thought of cancelling that 8-buck silliness and putting 8 bucks a month in a sock until you have enough to buy whatever game strikes your fancy, or even enough to buy the starter stack of TG.net tokens?

p.s. I must admit that the overall TG game collection is still not strong enough for me to be interested in "investing" through holding unused tokens. I very much appreciate Stardock's basic business model, but of the demos I've tried (not tons, but several), GCII is by far the strongest game, at least for my 4X-centered tastes.

We've thought about the possibility of a 2-token per month subscription plan, but I'm not sure there'd be enough interest in it.

Personally, I prefer the tokens system to a flat-sub rate.  Sure, with a sub system you get whatever gets released as part of your subscription, but that doesn't necessarily mean a good deal.  What usually happens with something like that is you may get one or two months where a bunch of cool stuff gets released, and then you'll have a long drought with nothing interesting.  So it seems like you're getting a good deal on those months that see a lot of content, but then you feel majorly ripped off on months where nothing good comes out.

Also, typically with a sub system, once you stop paying, you lose access to the games.  Tokens let you spend them when you want, keep them for a pretty long time, and the games you buy are yours forever.  There's no loss of access etc.

And to G.W Swicord's comment on content on TGN...

Check out Sins of a Solar Empire, a 4X RTS game developed by Ironclad Studios, and published by Stardock.  It'll be both in retail shops and available for online purchase via TGN later next year.  It's still not quite in beta yet, but it's a VERY promising looking game.  Definitely AAA quality stuff.  Also take a look at Space Rangers 2, which we added to TGN just last week.  It got some pretty solid critical praise and is worth checking out.

We're growing our library, it just takes some time

Well of course you've thought of it, since it's so obvious. The real question is, why don't you do it?

Because it would be easier to pay $10 - $15 a month instead of $70 right now. How am I supposed to get my wife to okay that?? It's gonna be hard enough to get her to let me pre-pay for GalCiv II:Dark Avatar as it is!! I also need to get CIV Warlords too. I was just curious if any other deals had been thought of instead of a one time charge. Jeez, ask a simple question and get ridiculed like that!!

Well, if we were to offer a token subscription plan, you'd need to be a TotalGaming.net member first (most likely). So you'd still need to pay the initial $69.95 membership and from there would have more options for additional tokens.
