Music Review: A'me Lorain "Whole Wide World"

A'me Lorain

Whole Wide World
Album: Standing In A Monkey
Year: 1989

A’me Lorain is ready to introduce her boyfriend to family and friends in the gaudy “Whole Wide World.”

Ear-splitting drum machines and synths open the single, setting a raucous tone. In the first verse, she says she likes to tease the romances she has out. She’ll tell her friends only vague details and remain mum, which drives them crazy. However, she’s excited about her new boyfriend. When she recently got together with her friends, she had to bite her tongue to contain herself. Unlike past experiences, she won’t be surprised by the revelation that the guy once dated one of her friend’s friends and their messed up history.
“I always love a little mystery/But now the tension’s killing me /No place left for words to hide /I never thought it could be quite so tough /Lips once sealed are splitting up /There ain’t no secrets to outshine/Father time.”

In the pre-chorus, she tells him she prefers not to be in a clandestine relationship. It’s best they let everyone know. She has to tell people she’s dating him. Her boyfriend is wondering what she’s trying to say.
“Whispers in the dark don’t do /Let’s hit the lights/Now I just got to spread the news/So what are you telling me/What are you telling me/What are you telling me/What are you telling me.”

In the chorus, she says she’s going to set up a dinner where he can meet her friends and later, her family. She’s certain she wants to be with him. She tells them their relationship is turning serious.
“I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/I don’t’ have any ifs, I am positive/I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/We’re never gonna be alone, our love is stone.”

In the second verse, she says there is so much to tell them. She wants to share the story of how they first met. She didn’t want to tell them about him, out of fear it won’t work out. However, it’s better than she imagined and she knows he’s going to be in her life forever.
“Too many words are too much a crowd/I wanna spill ‘em or they’ll leak out/I’m so glad to get the chance/I kept it secret till I knew for sure/So not to pick my heart off the floor/Now it’s time to take a stand, heart in hand.”

The pre-chorus is sung again.

In the second chorus, she says he’s her best friend, listening to her when she’s upset. She finally has the relationship she’s always wanted and she doesn’ want it to end.
“I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/When I drop a tear you are always here/I wanna tell the whole wide world about you (I wanna tell)/
I’m looking at a living dream, don’t wake me up.”

In the bridge, she tells him to continue loving her. It was an instant attraction, setting off a beautiful pang in her heart. She then tells the synth to whistle. A shrill synth solo follows.
“Don’t stop! Love me till you drop/It’s alright with me/One sharp arrow through the heart /It’s alright, its alright/Now whistle.”

In the third chorus, she says she will fight for the relationship. He’s the one for her.
“I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/I will never give you up/I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/You’re my one and only love.”

The pre-chorus is sung again.

In the final chorus, she says she wants people to know he’s her perfect matchful and faithful. She wants to be exclusive and their love is true.
“I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/I wanna tell the everybody you’re my cup of tea/I wanna tell the whole wide world about you /Your love never shakes, you don’t alternate/I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/Smoke gets in my eyes, I don’t see other guys/I wanna tell the whole wide world about you/Our love will never tumble down/It’s built on solid ground.”

Lorain has kept quiet about her dates, ever since she got hurt after her then boyfriend fell for one of her friends. It created a ton of drama and almost imploded her circle. But now, she’s found a guy who’s good to her and she has to tell someone or she’ll burst. She doesn’t have to worry about him cheating or lying. She knows it’s going to be a meaningful relationship.

Her callow, girlish vocals are frivolous and harsh on the ears (due to beign high-pitched). She’s proud of her new boyfriend. However, it seems as though she’s interested in using him as a status symbol. She seems to fall in love all the time.

The strident arrangement clatters, blaring the synths and drum machines. Caught in the din is a choral “ah,” which unfortunately can’t be heard. It’s underused and could’ve provided an interesting worshipful element to the song.

The silly “Whole Wide World” flounders at its attempt to be intelligent dance music.
