What I Like About You
Album: The Romantics
Year: 1980
Jimmy Marinos appreciates his girlfriend in the exhilarated “What I Like About You.”
A vivacious guitar opens the single, setting a thrilled tone. Marinos intros it by saying “hey” and “ah-ha.”
In the first verse, he enjoys her affection. She squeezes him when they lay next to each other and whispers to him that he’s the one. She keeps her promises and will bring a nice meal for them to eat.
In the chorus, she tells him he’s a wonderful guy and there’s no one like him. He’s a great kisser and every positive compliment a girlfriend could give. Her words mean so much to him.
In the second verse, he says he likes to watch her dance. She keeps her eyes on him as she twists and turns around him. It turns him on.
The second chorus is sung again.

Jimmy Marinos appreciates his girlfriend in the exhilarated “What I Like About You.”
A vivacious guitar opens the single, setting a thrilled tone. Marinos intros it by saying “hey” and “ah-ha.”
“Hey, ah-ha/Hey, ah-ha.”
In the first verse, he enjoys her affection. She squeezes him when they lay next to each other and whispers to him that he’s the one. She keeps her promises and will bring a nice meal for them to eat.
“What I like about you/You hold me tight/Tell me I'm the only one/Going to come over tonight.”
In the chorus, she tells him he’s a wonderful guy and there’s no one like him. He’s a great kisser and every positive compliment a girlfriend could give. Her words mean so much to him.
“Keep on whispering in my ear/Tell me all the things that I wanna hear/'Cause that's true ( That's what I like)/That's what I like about you (That's what I like about you).”
In the second verse, he says he likes to watch her dance. She keeps her eyes on him as she twists and turns around him. It turns him on.
“What I like about you/You really know how to dance/When you go up, down, jump around/Think about true romance, yeah.”
The second chorus is sung again.
““Keep on whispering in my ear/Tell me all the things that I wanna hear/'Cause that's true ( That's what I like)/That's what I like about you (That's what I like about you)/ That's what I like about you (That's what I like about you)/ That's what I like about you (That's what I like).”
Marinos screams “wow.” It’s followed by a vigrant guitar solo, then a jubilant harmonica solo.
In the third verse, he says she likes to spoon when they are sleeping. He likes being her pillow. She makes him feel wanted and loved.“What I like about you/You keep me warm at night/Never wanna let you go/Know you make me feel alright, yeah.”
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, he whispers to her all the things about he couldn’t live without.“That's what I like about you (That’s what I like about you)/That's what I like about you (That’s what I like about you)/That's what I like about you (That’s what I like about you).”
He “hey’s” and “ah-ha’s” about four times to close the single.“Hey, ah-ha/Hey, hey, hey/Hey, ah-ha/Hey, ah-ha/Hey!”
He can’t stop talking about his girlfriend. She’s absolutely great to him and one of a kind. He’s never met anyone who was more giving or kind. She’s the woman of his dreams and he couldn’t any prouder of her.
Marinos’ self-possessed vocals are adoring and playful. He wants to be able to show her how happy she makes him. He’s in love and can’t hide it.
The happy-go-lucky arrangement pops and bubbles over with contentment.
The fabulous “What I Like About You” leaves listeners wanting more.
