Breakfast In Bed
Album: Brenda K. Starr
Year: 1987

Brenda K. Starr and her boyfriend make love in the morning in the savory “Breakfast In Bed.”

Come-hither synths open the single, setting a suggestive tone. In the intro, she compliments him on his caresses.
“That’s so nice/I like that/Please.”

In the first verse, she tells him people are saying he’s moving too fast with her. It’s only a fling and he should go slowly. She can feel him hold back when he kisses her. He’s sexually frustrated and won’t do anything about it. She says he doesn’t have to be that way any longer.
“I know you’re tired of listening to the wrong advice/You don’t say it too much but I can see it your eyes/Don’t try it hide it, I know that you’re dissatisfied/But you know you can change it, if you feel it….”

In the chorus, she tells him they will sleep together at night. Then, in the morning they will have sex. Sexual self-gratificiation will only take him so far.
“And there’ll be no more lonely nights/Just breakfast in bed (breakfast in bed)/Let me be the one who starts your day/With breakfast in bed/There’s no satisfication in waking up alone/If you feel some attraction/Then you’ll know/There’ll be no more lonely nights/Just breakfast in bed (breakfast in bed)/Let me be the one who starts your day/With breakfast in bed/And there’ll be no more lonely nights/Just breakfast in bed (breakfast in bed).”

In the first bridge, she says she’ll be the right girl for him and he won’t regret losing his virginity to her.
“You need someone to talk to (breakfast in bed)/I’ll talk to you/Oh.”

A simmering guitar solo follows.

In the second verse, she says tells him to make a decision as soon as possible. She has to have him now.
“Please/Don’t delay any longer/It’s getting stronger/Don’t wait.”

A shortened chorus follows.
“And there’ll be no more lonely nights/Just breakfast in bed (breakfast in bed)/Let me be the one who starts your day/With breakfast in bed/There’s no satisfication in waking up alone/If you feel some attraction/Then you’ll know/There’ll be no more lonely nights/Just breakfast in bed (breakfast in bed). ”

In the final section, she flirts with him, saying he likes her body. She tells him she wants to explore her sexuality with him.
“Ah, come on boy/I know what you want/I know you want breakfast in bed/Come on please, I know what you mean/You wanna know/I want it, too/Come on, give it to me/Don’t go away (breakfast in bed)/I want to know (breakfast in bed).”

Starr learned about sex in her health classes. But she had been curious about what it would be like to be with someone. She’s dating her first serious boyfriend and her hormones are in overdrive. Although she promised herself to wait, she can’t do it anymore.

Starr’s teasing, heedless vocals are playful and raunchy. She knows the consequences but prefers not to think of them. All that matters is the present. The youthfulness in her voice causes the single to be provocative in nature (more so than the lyrics suggest). She sounds like 14 during the chorus and parts of the final section. But during the spoken sections, she sounds like mature twentysomething.

The voluptuous arrangement strokes and titillates the notes with its velvety synths.

The naughty “Breakfast In Bed” uses a clever innuendo to get its point across in a imaginative way.
