Music Review: Sweet Sensation "If Wishes Came True"

Sweet Sensation

If Wishes Came True
Album: Love Child
Year: 1990

Betty LeBron pines for her ex-boyfriend in the imploring ballad “If Wishes Came True.”

Downhearted strings and a kind flamenco guitar open the single, setting a melancholy tone. Then, the tumid synths rise, muting the rest the arrangement. In the first verse, she says she has stayed in her room since the breakup. The music and television remain off. The songs and shows remind her of him. His voice lingers in her mind and she shuts her eyes to relive the memory of being with him all over again. But once she opens her eyes, the pictures in her mind darken and stop. She would like dream herself to when they first kissed and suspend time. Their relationship was joyous and strong then. She can’t believe they don’t even talk anymore.
“All alone silence fills my room/But in a memory/I hear you calling me/Close my eyes and I'm there with you/Like it was like yesterday/But then it fades away /Take me back turn back the hands of time /When you kissed me in the warm September rain (warm September rain)/Back before my heart was filled with pain/If only we could be in love that way again.”

In the chorus, she says if her hopes were solidified, she would be cuddling in his arms. He would tell her she’s the only one for him. They would still be making plans and not living separate lives.
“If wishes came true/And all the dreams at night of love were real/I'd be holding you/If wishes came true/Then I would be that someone always special in your heart/We would still be lovers not apart/If wishes came true.”

In the second verse, she says she isn’t sure who she is without him in her life. At night, she has vivid dreams of him, kissing her and holding her hand. It’s like he never felt. It’s a shock in the morning to wake up, knowing she won’t see him.
“Now you're gone and I am on my own/Feeling lost inside/Since you said goodbye/In my dreams I can still feel your touch/Lying next to me/Feeling ecstasy/Take me back turn back the hands of time /When you kissed me in the warm September rain (warm September rain)/Back before my heart was filled with pain/If only we could be in love that way again.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the pre-chorus, she beseeches to him in the silence, saying she’s still in love with him and has to have beside her again. Their relationship can be repaired and made new with a conversation.
“I love you madly/I need you badly/Give our love one more chance.”

A bawling electric guitar solo

The chorus is sung again to close the single.

LeBron believed her relationship was going to last forever. They had already decided to go to Connecticut to visit his family for Christmas. She had her bought her plane ticket and took the time off work. They were also looking for an apartment together. Then, one day last week he said he wasn’t ready for the commitment they were working towards. It devastated her, finding out the plans were never meant to be.

Her forlorn, sober vocals are assured and sensible. Although she knows it’s not likely they will be together ever again, she still squeezes to the last bit of hope she has left. It what helps her though the endless sobbing and loneliness.

The swollen arrangement, with its puffy strings and troubled synths, cries uncontrollably. Every note is heavy from the pain. It is expressive, although it tends to go overboard with the synths. However, the sadness really has no choice but to break through.

The emotional “If Wishes Came True” is first aid for a breakup.
