Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now
Album: Samantha Fox
Year: 1987
Samantha Fox stands up to her controlling boyfriend in the defiant “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now.”
Carefree synths open the single, setting a liberated tone. In the intro, she says she’s leaving and there are no more words that will make her stay any longer.
In the first verse, she says she used to be crazy about him. She thought she was being the devoted girlfriend by listening to his orders. However, after sacrificing her dreams to please him, she realizes it was more than she could handle. She began to take notice of the time he left and came home. She would time how long he watched television and then fell asleep. After much planning, she had managed to get most of her nonessentials to a friend’s home. As she tells him, she warns him not to manipulate her with kind promises.
In the chorus, she says she’s not interesting in trying again. She’s going to dump him and move on with her life.
In the second verse, she said while she was with him, she fiery personality disappeared. She became insecure and thought she was the blame for everything. He made her feel small and used her to get what he wanted. In his arms, she would question why he would call her ugly if he claimed to love her. She had started thinking about dumping him the day she caught him in a major lie. She believed she wouldn’t get out and never be who she was before.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, the background singers support her.
A raving electric guitar solo follows.
The latter half of the second verse is sung again.
The chorus is sung twice to close the single.
For the first six months, she thought she had a fantastic relationship. Even though her boyfriend only paid attention to her to criticize or give her a command, she thought it was a positive sign. They were communicating and after all, he had said he loved her. However, after a year, he began to tell her whom she could see or where she could go. She thought it was strange until one day he said he couldn’t talk to her family. Then, she knew she had to get out. But she didn’t know how. She decided to plan and then make a quick getaway, informing him she was going and not to contact her ever again.
Fox’s bold, tarty vocals are empowering and blunt. His sweet talk won’t work on her anymore neither his begging for another chance. It’s over. Producers Stock, Aiken, and Waterman pull out the harshness in her voice, tone it down a notch, and transform it into a torrid performance.
The ecstatic synth arrangement releases a breath, tasting freedom while the snarling bass muscles the way out.
The remarkable “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me Now” brings out the best in Fox.

“There was a time I couldn't get you out of my mind/And since the day you came you tried to take control of me/Then came the day, I thought about running away/And now my bags are packed, don't even think of holding me back.”

“Nothing's gonna stop me now/And I don't wanna talk it over/I said nothing's gonna stop me now/Gonna break it up/Gonna take my love away, yeah, yeah.”
