He’s So Shy
Album: Special Things
Year: 1980
Ruth Pointer falls for a quiet guy out in the ambivalent “He’s So Shy.”
Buoyant synths open the single, setting an excitable tone. In the first verse, she says she was afraid to talk to him. He seemed to angry and avoided anyone who looked his way. Although Pointer liked him, she knew she couldn’t be her usual flirtatious self. However, he sees and grins widely. She knew he had his attention. She realized she had to start with a simple “hello” and gradually, into a conversation. Nonetheless, she would have to change her usual questions
In the chorus, she says he’s a bashful guy who doesn’t really say much. However, he’s really nice and handsome. He treats her well, which makes up for him not being as outgoing as she’d like.
In the second verse, she says they are now in a serious relationship. Each night, she stays in his apartment and cuddles with him in his bed. It took her a while to get to know him and finally, go out on a date with him. However, it was worth it. It’s a wonderful romance that fulfills her every need. Each time she sees him, it’s like the day she met him all over the again. She gets butterflies and her face flushes.
In the first adlibbed chorus, she says he’s a gorgeous man. One glance and a smile, and she is turned on by him. He’s a special guy and she’s pleased for not stereotyping him as dumb or angry. She will love him forever. “(He's so shy) So good lookin'/(He's so shy) He's really got me goin' (That sweet little boy)/(Who caught my eye)/(He's so shy) I'm so glad I've got to know him/(He's so shy) 'Cause he's one in a million/(And I'll love him 'til the day I die)/Oh, yes I will.”
In the second adlibbed chorus, she says his demure nature is the reason she’s still with him.
At first, she didn’t know how to approach him. She didn’t know the signals she was sending were too aggressive or subtle. However, after several coffee dates, she discovered there was a lot to him. It’s a great relationship.
Pointer’s proud, tickled vocals are blind and condescending. He’s like a cute little puppy that loves her and jumps whenever she comes over. She wants the relationship to work. She may not always understand him or able to figure him out, but she cares about him. It’s all that should matter.
The skeptical synths pace back and forth, twinging with doubt. It undercuts her bliss by questioning her assertions.
The thin “He’s So Shy” is an ineffective pop song.

“When I first saw him standin' there/I wanted to speak but did not dare/Something inside whispered to me/You'd better move in carefully/And then he smiled and turned away/That told me all he could not say/That's when I knew/He wanted me too/But I had to do some breakin' through.”

“Now holding him gently through the night/Nothin' has ever felt so right/And I'm so glad I took the time/That I had to take to make him mine/He can still do things to my heart/Just like he could right from the start/Each time I see/That quality/That never stopped attracting me.”

“(Oh, he's so shy) That's why I love my baby/(He's so shy) You know he's drivin' me crazy/(That sweet little boy who caught my eye) I said, he's so shy/It took a long time to know him (He's so shy)And I'm so glad I got to show him/That I'll love him until the day I die/Oh, yeah/(And he's so shy)Oh-wee, oh-wee, baby (He's so shy)/Oh-wee, oh-wee, baby (He's so shy).”
