Music Review: Spice Girls "2 Become 1"

Emma Bunton loses her virginity to her boyfriend in the amorous ballad “2 Become 1.”

Erotic strings and wanting bass open the single, setting a sensous tone. In the first verse, Melanie Chisholm says the evening is exactly the way she imagined it. The candles perched on the countertop and tables throughout the house, bathing the house in an impassioned light. It was a night she thought about often and hoped would happen. She asks him if he wanted to be with her with, too. She tells him to forget about their tumultuous past. Their relationship has made it through some hard roads and survived intact. She won’t leave him for anyone else. Victoria Beckham holds his shaking arm, telling him to calm down and relax. It’s him she wants and not some random guy she met at the club. It’s possible for them to know every private detail of each other.

“Candle light and soul forever/A dream of you and me together/Say you believe it, say you believe it/Free your mind of doubt and danger/Be for real don't be a stranger,We can achieve it, we can achieve it.”

In the chorus, she pats the couch and asks him to be near her. She says they will consummate their relationship tonight.

“Come a little bit closer baby, get it on, get it on/'Cause tonight is the night when two become one.”

In the chorus, Bunton says it’s an urgent craving that she never had until she met him. They had made out but now she’s ready to take their relationship further. She says they have to give themselves to each other without question. It’s what will make the night meaningful for both of them.

“I need some love like I never needed love before (wanna make love to ya baby)/I had a little love, now I'm back for more (wanna make love to ya baby)/Set your spirit free, it's the only way to be.”

In the second verse, Chisholm says their relationship was superficial before. He tried to make her jealous by dating someone else and she told him she didn’t want anything to do with him. None of them meant what they actually. She says their lovemaking will strengthen their love. Beckham adds it’s natural and eventual.

“Silly games that you were playing/Empty words we both were saying/Let's work it out boy, let's work it out boy/Any deal that we endeavour/Boys and girls feel good together/Take it or leave it, take it or leave it.”

In the pre-chorus, she wonders if his touch will still heat her skin, thrilling her to the bone.

“Are you as good as I remember baby, get it on, get it on/'Cause tonight is the night when two become one.”

The chorus is sung again.
A gentle guitar has a solo.
In the pre-chorus, she tells him fall into her and not pull away.

“Be a little wiser baby, put it on, put it on/’Cause tonight is the night when two become one.”

The second chorus is sung. Mainly, the first and the second lyrics are repeated a couple extra times. An orchestra is also added.

The erotic strings, with its throbbing orchestra, close the single.

Bunton and her boyfriend dated for a year, but it was filled with kissing and insecurity. Neither knew what they wanted but they didn’t want to disappoint each other. They broke up after fighting over little things. But after meeting up again at a mutual friend’s party, they began talking again and discovered they still loved one another. They started hanging out all the time and soon dating. Quickly, it developed into a loving relationship.

The Spice Girls’ vocals are silky and tempting. It’s a graceful seduction that craves intimacy. It’s an unquenchable desire inside silenced by hungry kisses.

The covetous arrangement pulses and thirsts for affection, drawing the lovers together in a consuming, invulnerable bond.

The tasteful “2 Become 1” is a pop classic.
