Music Review: Mario "Let Me Love You"

Mario

Let Me Love You
Album: Turning Point
Year: 2004

Mario has a heart-to-heart with his crush in the adulatory “Let Me Love You.”

Sensitive keyboards, grating handclaps and the saxophone sample from Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” open the single, setting a hodgepodge tone. Mario also adlibs some “mmm’s” and “yeah’s” for close to 25 seconds.

In the first verse, he tells her he doesn’t understand the logic of her remaining with her boyfriend for so long. Her boyfriend cheats on her frequently and shamelessly. He comes home to her with a lipstick stained shirt and stinking of a flowery scented perfume. He tells her the meeting ran late. She just nods, knowing full well he went to sleep with another woman. Mario tells her she’s a great woman. But he wants to know why she would date a jerk?
“Baby I just don't get it/Do you enjoy being hurt?/I know you smelled the perfume, the make-up on his shirt/
You don't believe his stories/You know that they're all lies/Bad as you are, you stick around and I just don't know why.”

In the pre-chorus, Mario explains that if they were a couple, he would be devoted to her. She wouldn’t have to be concerned about catching him in a lie or looking through his cell phone numbers to hear voicemails from other girls. Mario would make sure she was being taken care of. He would give her anything she needs and desires.
“If I was ya man (baby you)/Never worry bout (what I do)/I'd be coming home (back to you)/Every night, doin' you right/You're the type of woman (deserves good thangs)/Fistful of diamonds (hand full of rings)/Baby you're a star (I just want to show you, you are).”

In the chorus, he asks for a chance. He says it would be a healthy relationship, if she decided to choose him over her boyfriend.
“You should let me love you/Let me be the one to give you everything you want and need/Baby good love and protection/
Make me your selection/Show you the way love's supposed to be/Baby you should let me love you, love you, love you.”

In the second verse, he praises her, telling her that she’s a beautiful woman. She’s better than a 10. However, he knows she focuses on her flaws and thinks she’s ugly. However, when they hang out together, people compliment her on her clothes or her warm smile.
“Listen/Your true beauty's description looks so good that it hurts/You're a dime plus ninety-nine and it's a shame/Don't even know what you're worth/Everywhere you go they stop and stare/Cause you're bad and it shows/From your head to your toes, out of control, baby you know.”

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, he explains that she should a nice guy who will treat her right. He says they should date. It will be an easygoing relationship. He asks if they can finally end the talking stage and move onto something real.
“You deserve better girl (you know you deserve better)/We should be together girl (baby)/With me and you it's whatever girl, hey!/So can we make this thing ours?”

The chorus is sung three times.

At the end, Mario smirks that he will be the answer to her despair.
“(spoken) Let me love you that's all you need baby.”

Mario has known his girl friend for a couple years now. They met through work and stayed in contact. She confides in him, telling him of her doubts about her boyfriend and questions herself for being with him. Mario has decided to have a frank discussion with her about her boyfriend’s treatment her and mention that they should date. Something’s been going on for a while between them. However, she wouldn’t admit it. Since her boyfriend isn’t around at all, she mostly spends time with him and calls Mario her best friend.

Mario’s kind, polite vocals are genuine. He’s looking out for her best interests. Listening to her questioning herself and put herself down is tough to hear. He wants to see her happy with him. After all, they get along great. One minor quibble, though, Mario shouldn’t have spoken sections in his songs until he can properly act it. Unfortunately, he sounds smug and opportunisitic. It just doesn’t come across well.

The cluttered arrangement has a little bit of keyboard, some distracting handclaps, faint strings, and a saxophone sample. To clean it up a bit, the saxophone sample should be gone. While a small part of it is used, it’s still recongnizable. It takes away from it first, given that it sounds familiar but hard to place. Second, the handclaps need to be cleared out. A single with a soft mood shouldn’t have clanging handclaps. Again, it breaks the mood. The strings should’ve been utilized more as well as the saxophone part which blends in with the sample.

The so-so “Let Me Love You” has Mario going through some growing pains with his music.
