64% of Online Gamers are Women

What????

I think this is really great, and a big surprise. I expected the number to be much lower than what it is. A study conducted by Nielsen Entertainment showed that 64% of online gamers are woman. Also, about 8% of that are woman who are at least 45 years old.

The study doesn't stay what type of games are played, so it's assumed that this also includes flash based games as well. So if any of your are on Xbox Live be sure to look me up.

Oh! Yeah, if it's flash games (i.e. Bejeweled et al), I could see that being the case.

The other option is that they counted all the female characters in EQ/WoW/etc without realizing that they're all actually dudes.

lol, I actually doubt this. In my experience (family and friends families ) most adults (late 30's) didn't even know how to operate a computer let alone play games. Except scrabble and other "online board games".

But who knows, maybe I am wrong. And according to this study... I am lol.

I agree with Keikonium...it's almost too good to be true. Maybe I'm wrong but I sincerely doubt well over half are women - Ya, I know it's saying ONLINE GAMES but I've been to too many computer/video game type stores & have yet to see a girl purchase anything remotely resembling a PC game of any kind...they've got this all wrong.

I'm certain female gamers are much more prone to social online games because of the inherent quality of contact with other gamers. I don't think it's 64%, though, and I'd like to see how Nielson derived these figures.

A survey of 2200 gamers? As the Island Dog knows, polls are somewhat misleading due to their limited numbers predicting the actions / thoughts of those on the larger scale.

This is plain silly. Who do you think design computers and writes all the software out there. Almost every job requires one to have knowlede of and use a computer. There are a lot more computer users out there between 30 and 78 years old, including my 67 y/o father, using computers then there are people between the ages of 18 and 30.

It seems as your limited experience in life has shown brightly in this statement.

I think they meant to refer to online dating sites. Had to have been a typo.

You must screen your phone calls to ask that kind of question.......

The numbers MAY be slanted toward women because women are more prone to answer the phone and allow themselves to be "part of a study by answering a few questions" whereas men just hang up or tell them to kiss something or ask what they're wearing....

I guess I'm one of the rare ones. 22 years old and female and playing WoW almost daily. I generally play with my hubby though or try to get some pvp in when my toddler is napping.

A study conducted by Nielsen Entertainment showed that 64% of online gamers are woman.

A stat put out by sad, lonely gamer geeks attempting to make their closseted existence look 'good'...

...or...

More likely....64% of gamers are of indeterminate sex...

....or....

64% of gamers can't tell the difference....

I'm 52...have killed more computers than you have had hot dinners....

...and currently have 67 games installed....none is an 'online board game', or 'scrabble'.....

I will admit that I don't have but only the solitaire games on my machine now, other that bejeweled but I do have over 50 dos, pre XP games on my shelf and I'a, 59. Sorry, but us old people do know our way around computers and games. None is an online game.

Unless the whole population is contacted and asked there will never be a "true" survey. Although I often play the likes of WoW and guild wars I much prefer my Medal of honor online, i'm only 25 so thats my excuse

Oh and i'm male so i'm exemp't

Too shameless of a plug to be a guerilla marketing act!

Oh and they generally only play/talk about Ubisoft titles openly since they are fully sponsored by Ubisoft.

flash games? well that makes sense. I know some girls who spend their whole day ( at work ) just playing flash games. i'd like the study to show how many men play women characters in massive multi player games...

Well, I am a woman and I play video games, but not online. I have PS2 and Nintendo64, There have been times in my life that I played so much I started dreaming about playing when I was alseep. I started playing when a game called Pong came out ( I know that dates me) and have been hooked ever since.
Mario Bros. came out about the time my daughter became interested in playing so we played all those together for years. We also loved the Zelda games. Now I play Final Fantasy games. All of them, except the online version. They are my favorite. I guess you could call me a video glame playing fool.
