No Scrubs
Album: Fanmail
Year: 1999

Chili avoids the bottom-feeding men in the conceited “No Scrubs.”

Frosty keyboards open the single, setting a patronizing tone.In the first verse, she says she’s not interested in scrubs. They are the type of guys who are lazy and are all talk.
“A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me/And is also known as a buster/Always talkin' about what he wants/And just sits on his broke ass/So (no).”

In the pre-chorus, she turns them down flat, saying she’s not going call them later or sleep with them. They aren’t worth it. She has better things to do.
“I don't want your number (no)/I don't want to give you mine and (no)/I don't want to meet you nowhere (no)/I don't want none of your time and (no).”

In the chorus, she reiterates that she doesn’t like losers. They yell at her, asking her for a date, while they are in their best friend’s car.
“I don't want no scrub/A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me/Hanging out the passenger side/Of his best friend's ride/
Trying to holler at me/I don't want no scrub/A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me/Hanging out the passenger side/Of his best friend's ride/Trying to holler at me.”

In the second verse, she says losers are intimidated by her. She says she’s a sophiscated woman in designer clothes while he’s wearing whatever he found on clearance at Big Lots. The idea of being with a guy who can’t afford decent clothing disgusts her.
“But a scrub is checkin' me/But his game is kinda weak/And I know that he cannot approach me/Cuz I'm lookin' like class and he's lookin' like trash/Can't get wit' no deadbeat ass/So (no).”

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, she says she won’t go out with a man who doesn’t own a car, still lives at home with his parents, neglects his girlfriend, and is unemployed.
“If you don't have a car and you're walking/Oh yes son I'm talking to you/If you live at home wit' your momma/’
Oh yes son I'm talking to you (baby)/If you have a shorty but you don't show love/Oh yes son I'm talking to you/Wanna get with me with no money/Oh no I don't want no (oh)/No scrub/No scrub (no no)/No scrub (no no no no no)/No scrub (no no)/No.”

The chorus is sung four times to close the single.

Like anyone, Chili has standards for the type of guy she’ll date. For instance, she doesn’t want a lowlife sleaze that cheats on his girlfriend. However, most of the qualities are superficial. She places importance on cars, money, and clothes. While it’s understandable she won’t have anything to do with an obnoxious guy with no ambition, it’s rather judgemental to dismiss those who can’t afford what sees essential.

Chili’s nasal, smug vocals are strained and ordinary. Her superiority is also doubtful, given she can barely reach the notes. If she can’t invest in voice lessons, won’t makes her any different from any of the men she’s talking about?

The snippy keyboards cut and slash in a clueless, sloppy way. It’s a familiar beat that sounds like several dozen songs released during the late 90s, early 2000s.

The shallow “No Scrubs” is nowhere near as hot as it think it is.
