Hero Takes A Fall
Album: All Over The Place
Year: 1984

Susanna Hoffs wishes ill will on her arrogant ex-boyfriend in the vengeful “Hero Takes A Fall.”

Gutsy guitars open the single, setting a stony tone. In the first verse, she says her ex-boyfriend, who often plays the sensitive, protective male role, cannot continue to pretend. One day, he will be known as a cad, despite his protests he’s a great guy. Women will be throw drinks at them and she will sit back, enjoying every splash of sticky pop that drenches his face and clothes.
“The hero is exposed when/His crimes are brought to the light of day/Won't be feelin' sorry, sorry, sorry/On the judgement day.”

In the chorus, she says she doesn’t enforce karma. However, when he finds his life in shambles after losing the only girl he’s ever loved, she won’t care.
“It wasn't me who said/There'll be a price to pay/
And I won't feel bad at all/When the hero takes a fall/When the hero takes a fall (Hero takes a fall)/Oh no.”

In the second verse, she says his mother told him he was great, wonderful man and any woman will be lucky to have him. In turn, he searches for submissive girls who will worship him and let him run the relationship.
“Your mother told you stories/You substitute with girls who tell you more/Suddenly you sight a fancy chance/Since love is at your door.”

In the second chorus, she says no one believes his act anymore. It’s something she can figure out without even thinking.
“We're seeing through you now/I saw it all before/And I won't feel bad at all/When the hero takes a fall/When the hero takes a fall (Hero takes a fall)/Oh no.”

In the bridge, affirmative “oh’s” follow.
“Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh/Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh/Oh oh, oh oh, uh-huh oh.”

In the third verse, she says people who appreciate others who are able to show their feelings. However, he sees it as a danger which could crumble the image he portrays. After calling his latest girlfriend a week ago, he sits at home he awaits the excitd girl to call him back.
“Emotion is a virtue/For you, it is the one fatal flaw/Sitting on your throne and drinking/Thinking she'll return your call.”

In the third chorus, she says eventually, he will be knocked down from his self-built pedestal. And it will be soon.
“Every story's got an ending/Look out! Here it comes, here it comes/And I won't feel bad at all/
When the hero takes a fall/When the hero takes a fall (Hero takes a fall)/Oh whoa, whoa, whoa.”

The affirmative “oh’s” close the single.
“Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh/Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh/Oh oh, oh oh, uh-huh oh.”

When she met her ex-boyfriend he was sweet and full of promises. He sold himself as a warm, caring guy who was interested in a long-term relationship. But after being told they were spending time with his friends without asking her first, taking her to Chinese restraurant (even though she’s allergic) and then saying she had to pay, she had enough.

Hoffs’ gutty, spurned vocals are caustic and eager. She cannot wait to see her ex-boyfriend be crushed by like a beer and thrown into the garbage. It is, after all, the way he treated her.

The feisty guitar arrangement snaps, foaming at its mouth. Revenge will indeed be the tastiest meal.

“Hero Takes A Fall” is a can’t-miss listen from the Bangles.
