Defending an Ally's Planets

Why not be able to assist them in a fight?

I'm not entirely sure where this should go, so I put it here, since I guess it's an idea that could be used in the expansion.

In the game I'm playing currently, I had a fleet resting on my frontier, defending an enclave I have of planets recently captured. A few months ago, I gave a few of these planets to my Thalan allies, as they hadn't done terribly well in the race for colonies.

Anyways, this fleet is sitting there, and I notice a group of Altarian transports rushing towards a Thalan world. I try to intercept them, but my range falls short. However, I could've reached the planet and defended it -- if allies were allowed.

So here's my idea. Why not allow allied civilizations to defend one another's planets? Expanding on this, why create an ability to "allow" allies to lease ships to each other -- sort of handing them over temporarily, and perhaps picking up some cash by doing so.

I agree. That would be good.

It would be cool, but I cant count the number of time I've seen the AI fill their planets with ships and then leave them there, never moving them! This also keeps them from building more from that planet. Now imagine what would happen if they tried to help you 'defend' your main shipyard...

That's not too hard to work around. Give give whoever owns the planet the ability to kick out allied ships the same way you can kick out your own, and give a low-to-none chance that the AI will try parking a ship in a planet it was just kicked out of.

I'd also consider giving an option to allow/deny. Put it as a toggle in the diplomacy window. "Always allow reinforcements/Wait for approval for reinforcements/Never allow reinforcements", and allow the player to set that option for each ally. I'd also give the AI a chance to deny allowing you to park your ship in their space, and base it on how long the alliance has existed, how close the relationship between the two nations is, and your race's reputation for betraying friends.

that's a rather nice fleshing out of this idea.

It could add a new dimension to diplomacy. While the ally may need your assistance, and vice-versa, it also needs to consider the possibility of betrayal and a "shutdown" of the planet by the enemy ships already in orbit.
