Music Review: Olivia Newton-John "Physical"

Olivia Newton-John

Physical
Album: Physical
Year: 1981

Olivia Newton-John tempts her boyfriend to have sex with her in the obvious “Physical”

Fleshly synths open the single, setting a teasing tone. In the first verse, she says she’s using her low voice, which turns him on and complimenting him on his broad shoulders and creamy skin. She plans her words carefully and chooses topics which won’t upset him. She made reversations to eat at a restraraunt with lit candles on the tables and a fireplace in the center. She figures sex will be on his mind and it will be the only thing left to do.
“I'm saying all the things that I know you'll like/Making good conversation/I gotta handle you just right/You know what I mean/I took you to an intimate restaurant/Then to a suggestive movie/There's nothing left to talk about/Unless it's horizontally.”

In the chorus, she tells him they should have sex. It’s something she wants to share with him. She wants to feel the heat and goosebumps on his body.
“Let's get physical, physical/I wanna get physical/Let's get into physical/Let me hear your body talk, your body talk/Let me hear your body talk.”

In the second verse, she says she’s been waiting a long time to sleep with him. While they’ve been eating, she’s thought about putting her hand on his thigh. She has to release the sexual tension going on inside her. She explains they’ve been dating for six months now. They know each other’s expectations and wants. She’s also strongly attracted to him and craving a naked touch.
“I've been patient, I've been good/Tried to keep my hands on the table/It's gettin' hard this holdin' back/If you know what I mean/I'm sure you'll understand my point of view/We know each other mentally/You gotta know that you're bringin' out/The animal in me.”

The chorus is sung twice.

An excited electric guitar solo follows.

The chorus is sung again.

In the final chorus, she says she wants to focus on their carnal needs.
“Let's get animal, animal/I wanna get animal/Let's get into animal/Let me hear your body talkLet me hear your body talk.”

When she first met her boyfriend, she told him she wanted to go slow. She’s cautious and believes sex is a sacred act between two people who are in love with one other. But after several months of fiery goodnight kisses, she’s ready for more. She’s also broken her rule (regarding sex in relationships) twice. It’s gotten harder to maintain control herself around him.

Newton-John’s coy, pleasing vocals are awkward and unconvincing. She cannot overcome her innocent demeanor. Without the wink and nudge, she’s silly and practiced as she tries to seduce him. She has an appealing voice but it’s misused here.

The mischievious arrangement toys and cavorts about. However, its left unsatsifed.

The tame “Physical” is an exercise in unreached potential. Kylie Minogue would later cover the song for her 2001 “On A Night Like This” tour and make it hers.
