Looking For A New Love
Album: Jody Watley
Year: 1987

Jody Watley plays the field after desposing of her cheating boyfriend in the brassy “Looking For A New Love.”

Sounds of a bustling city and grunting synths open the single, setting a svelte tone. In the first verse, she says that although he said he loved her, he still ruined their relationship. It left her reeling. However, she promises not to dwell on the humiliation and hurt she’s feeling and be with someone who will treat her right. Despite her ex-boyfriend telling her no one will like her, she’s flirting with guys all the time and ask for dates. She retorts, inquiring him if he likes being replaced as she was.
“You gave me love, you did me wrong/Didn´t know what to do/But baby I am strong, going to get over you/A new boy I am going to choose (You will see)/My love was true, until you threw it all away/Now other guys will have me, they will appreciate my love/Tell me, how does it feel.”

In the pre-chorus, she says her ex-boyfriend knew she would do anything for him and took advantage of her kindess. However, she won’t let him do that to him again and wants to see other people. “You know that I needed you (you know that I needed you)/You know that you meant the world to me (you know that you meant the world to me)/You know I had to have you (you know I had to have you)/Now I am going to find somebody new (going to find someone new.)”

In the chorus, she tells him it’s over and intends to move on.
“I am looking for a new love baby/A new love, yea yea yea/I am looking for a new love baby/A new love, yea yea yea.”

In the second verse, she wants to know the details of his affair. She asks him if she was a vapid beauty who would submit to any position he desired. She has to know to help herself feel better. She also inquires if the tawdry sex was better than their relationship and if he is still going to sleep with her. She says he’s like all the other jerks out there and beneath her. She discards him with a no-nonsense “goodbye, baby” also known as the famous catchphrase, “Hasta la vista, baby.” James Cameron would later use it for the 1991 Terminator 2: Judgement Day movie.
“Was she hot, did she turn you out/Curiousity rules my brain/Was she worth my heart, it is torn all apart/Are you going back again? (Tell me)/My love was true, until you threw it all away/But now you are like the rest, unworthy of my best/Hasta la vista, baby.”

The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice.

The latter of the first and second verses are sung again.
“Other guys will have me, they will appreciate my love/Tell me, how does it feel/But now you are like the rest, unworthy of my best/Hasta la vista, baby.”

A staunch synth solo follows for almost a minute.

In the final section, she says she’s dating again, pausing with each line for the synth.
“I am looking for a new love baby, a new love/
I am looking for a new love baby, a new love/I am looking for a new love baby, a new love.”

Watley has decided not to consume herself with grief over a guy. He was a loser and ended up being someone she wouldn’t want in her life anyhow. She prefers to meet and flirt with other guys. She will find a nice boyfriend eventually.

Watley’s brash, dismissive spoken vocals have a trace of bitterness and disappointment. She cared about him. But he saw her as a pretty face to occupy the time and nothing more. However, she rather would go out with other men than have her self-esteem plummet each time she sees him.

The grunting, commanding synths tighten, clenching to the strength Watley conveys.

The classic “Looking For A New Love” holds up well and still is fantastic as it was then.
