To You I Belong
Album: B*Witched
Year: 1998

Edele Lynch boyfriend is with her in spirit in the imitative ballad “To You I Belong.”

In the first verse, Lynch says when she was at her worst, he got her through it. When she broke her arm, she wailed, wanting him to calm her. As thunder crashed onto the ground and the wind sent objects flying across the neighborhood, she talked to him.
“Rain fell down/You were there/I cried for you/When I hurt my hand/Storm a-rushing in/Wind was howling/I called for you, you were there.”

In the chorus, she says he is her dreams at night. However, their love does not end once the sun rises. Whenever she the tulips bloom or feels the crunch of leaves under her feet, he is walking beside her.
“Whenever dark turns to night/And all the dreams sing their song/And in the daylight forever/To you I belong.”

In the second verse, she says she went to the beach where they spent most of their time. There, she grabbed a stick and made a heart for him to see up in heaven. When she would visit the field where they talked about everything, she would run in it, feeling his kiss on her face.
“Beside the sea/When the waves broke/I drew a heart for you in the sand/In fields where streams/Turn to rivers/I ran to you, you were there.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she says that whenever she needs him, he appears for her.
“I ran to you, you were there.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the final section, she says he is hers forever.
“To you I belong/To you I belong.”

Edele Lynch’s boyfriend past away without warning. The day before he died, they were making plans for the summer. He told her had already made reservations at a fancy restraurant for their six month anniversary. It was the first boy she ever had fallen for and loved. They knew every detail of the other: most embarrassing moment, shameful secrets, and silly story. His passing shocked her. However, he is still with her.

Her wobbly, infantine vocals are strained and disappear in the arrangement. The girlishness in her voice, unfortunately, prevents her from being convincing as a grieving girlfriend.

The oceanic, Celtic arrangement tweaks the monster hit 1997 Celine Dion “My Heart Will Go On” single. It copies it down to the celtic horn rising in the bridge and then going away.

The pretty “To You I Belong” relies on its familiarity and looks, forgetting it needs to have brains as well.
