Ever The Same
Album: …Something To Be
Year: 2006
Rob Thomas holds his girlfriend together after a miscarriage in the lovesome ballad “Ever The Same.”
Patient keyboards and drums open the single, setting a stable tone. In the first verse, he says they started from nothing and gradually, built their lives. They struggled with low-paying jobs to pay the rent, mourned the death of parents, and fought over work schedules. However, they remained devoted to each other. She embraced him as he cried and reassured him that he wasn’t a failure. He couldn’t articulate then how much it meant to have her there.
In the pre-chorus, he tells her it’s ok to sob and break. He’ll listen and be there to support her.
In the chorus, he says she’s safe with him. With him, she can voice every doubt about herself. He will be her constant as she has been for him.
In the second verse, they were optimistic and bold. They had the security and promise of youth. However, as adults they’ve faced the thunderstorms of real life, which left them feeling alone and numb. He tells her they’ve been challenged from the worst already. They will make it through her miscarriage. It will not change how he feels about her.
The pre-chorus is sung again.
In the second chorus, he adds that she can contact him at anytime, day or night to talk. They are each other’s He promises their relationship will survive. It will always be the two of them.
In the bridge, he comforts her, telling her she isn’t monopolizing his time with her problems. He says it’s all right for her to reach out to him and relieve her of her pain. Over the years, she has given him hope and reengerized him. It’s not something that has gone unnoticed.
The second chorus is sung again.
In the final section, he says their love will be unyielding and powerful than anything the world throws at them.
An adoring guitar solo ends the single.
Thomas and his girlfriend have battled the every heartache and problem with all their strength. It may have left wounds, but they healed them together. She has been the force keeping him from tumbling into an emotional abyss. However, with her miscarriage, she feels alone and shamed. He will do all he can to give her the love she needs.
Thomas’ anguished, devout vocals are intimate and nurturing. It pangs him for her to be in so much pain. He would rather it be him. He truly lives for her. Without her, he would’ve been far gone a long time ago. It’s by far, one his best performed songs. Each lyric is given an understated emotional complexity.
The warm-hearted arrangement soothes and cradles, calming as it drys every tear.
The moving “Ever The Same” is a rarity. It seeks to give rather than brag or worship as love songs often do.

“We were drawn from the weeds/We were brave like soldiers/Falling down under the pale moonlight/You were holding to me/Like a someone broken/And I couldn't tell you but I'm telling you now.”
In the pre-chorus, he tells her it’s ok to sob and break. He’ll listen and be there to support her.
“Just let me hold you while you're falling apart/Just let me hold you and we'll both fall down.”
In the chorus, he says she’s safe with him. With him, she can voice every doubt about herself. He will be her constant as she has been for him.
“Fall on me/Tell me everything you want me to be/Forever with you forever in me/Ever the same.”

“We would stand in the wind/We were free like water/Flowing down/Under the warmth of the sun/Now it's cold and we're scared/And we've both been shaken/Hey, look at us/Man, this doesn't need to be the end.”
The pre-chorus is sung again.

“ Fall on me tell me everything you want me to be/Forever with you/Forever in me/Ever the same/Call on me/I'll be there for you and you'll be there for me/Forever it's you/Forever in me/Ever the same.”

“You may need me there/To carry all your weight/But you're no burden I assure/You tide me over/With a warmth I'll not forget/But I can only give you love.”
The second chorus is sung again.
