Questions about political parties

Sorry for the vague subject, but I couldn't phrase my question concisely.

Anyway, I think I've read that the number of votes your political party gets depends on how well your empire is doing. What I was wondering is what determines the number of votes that your rival political parties get.

Lets say I don't select war party for my party. If I go to war with Empire X, and my arse is being handed to me on a platter, does it mean that the war party will automatically get more votes? Or lets say I pick the war party, but my research is falling behind. Will the technologists gain more support?

Going along with the war party example, if I successfully keep the 'alien vermin in their place' will this be worth more votes than 'doing research'? I'm thinking that if peeps vote for my party, and I more or less deliver what I promised, I'd get more 'credit' for my achievements than if I managed to do something totally unrelated. What happens if I do well in all the areas, except for containing alien vermin?

I'm asking these questions because when (not if ;)) I get this game, I'm hoping that if I'm ever forced to focus on a single area, and neglect other areas, leading to the technologists gaining votes, I can concentrate on research, neglect social projects, then once the progressive party gains votes, I can switch to social projects, and basically juggle the opposition parties.

Hope that wasn't too painful to read.

Actually, each political party has it's prime opposition. The War Party has the Pacifists, the Mercahtile party has the Technologists, ect. So, if your morale is low, most likely votes will swing in favor of the opposint party, though at times other partys will swing the vote their way.

Perhaps its something that can be looked into for future add-ons, to make it less random. Not that it should be rigid, but if your kicking but in a war, the people are more than likely to support you more, likewise if your getting creamed they may vote to change leadership, regardless of what party you belong to.

This is a quote I read in an interview that Brad did.

"the Drengin government may agree with your policies but the “Drengin street” may not and they have to consider that in their dealings with you"

I was just curious as to how this manifests intself in the game? What does the AI go thru when it looks at how it feels with how it's people feel? Perhaps someone could give me an example?

I like the description of the Populists: "They care. They really do."

I don't know why I find that so funny.

Because Randy, you know that anyone who has to stress that "they really care" doesn't really (care)!

In the gamma, multiple invasion tactics were added, one of which is to subvert the native population instead of exterminating it.

Just had a thought. Is there any chance that elections can be temporarily suspended during war-time or some other emergency?

Or perhaps rig elections, buy off the opposition party?
