Music Review: Justin Timberlake & T.I. "My Love"

Justin Timberlake & T.I.

My Love
Album: FutureSex/LoveSounds
Year: 2006

Justin Timberlake proposes to his girlfriend in the stunning “My Love.”

He opens the single by saying that his girlfriend can’t be replaced. It leads to the vibrating synths, setting a breathless tone.
“Ain't another woman that can take your spot my.”

In the first verse, he asks if she would appreciate a symphony he worked on to express his feelings. He also wonders if the compliments he gives her impress her and want to spend every day with him. He says he’s traveled to Europe, Australia, Japan, and Africa and met many girls. However, she is the one who stands out. He gets on bended knee and says the diamond is a symbol of his deep feelings for her. He adds a “yes” answer would complete him.
“If I wrote you a symphony/Just to say how much you mean to me (what would you do?)/If I told you you were beautiful/Would you date me on the regular (tell me, would you?)/Well, baby I've been around the world/But I ain't seen myself another girl (like you)/This ring here represents my heart/But there's just one thing I need from you (say "I do").”

In the chorus, he says he envisions them taking late night strolls on the beach and resting among the quiet of the trees in silence. He promises he’s not going psychotic on her if she says no. He just wants her to stay with him.
“Yeah, because/I can see us holding hands/Walking on the beach, our toes in the sand/I can see us on the countryside/Sitting on the grass, laying side by side/You could be my baby, let me make you my lady/Girl, you amaze me/Ain't gotta do nothing crazy/See, all I want you to do is be my love/(So don't give away) My love/
(So don't give away) My love/(So don't give away) Ain't another woman that can take your spot, my love/(So don't give away) My love/(So don't give away) My love/(So don't give away) Ain't another woman that can take your spot, my love/Oh, girl/My love/My love.”

In the second verse, he says if he took the time to write a love letter, would she be pleased with what he said. He wonders if she would want to make a commitment to him. He says they’ve been dating long enough and it’s a natural progression in their relationship.
“Now, if I wrote you a love note/And made you smile with every word I wrote (what would you do?)/Would that make you want to change your scene/And wanna be the one on my team (tell me, would you?)/See, what's the point of waiting anymore?/Cause girl I've never been more sure (that baby, it's you)/This ring here represents my heart/And everything that you've been waiting for (just say "I do").”

The chorus is sung again.

Rapper T.I. says Timberlake’s girlfriend is great. He tells her to forget any other guys she may have still have feelings for. T.I. says Timberlake is a man who will treat her right. Then, he rambles on about himself and tries to steal Timberlake’s girlfriend for himself.
“Shorty, cool as a fan/On the new once again/But, still has fan from Peru to Japan/Listen baby, I don't wanna ruin your plan/If you got a man, try to lose him if you can/Cause your girls real wild throw your hands up high/When they wanna come kick it wit a stand up guy/You don't really wanna let the chance go by/Because you ain't been seen wit a man so fly/Friend so fly I can go fly/Private, cause I handle mine/B.I. they call me candle guy, simply because I am on fire/I hate to have to cancel my vacation so you can't deny/I'm patient, but I ain't gonna try/You don't come, I ain't gonna die/Hold up, what you mean, you can't go why?/Me and you boyfriend we ain't no tie/You say you wanna kick it with an ace so high
Baby, you decide that I ain't your guy/Ain't gon lie ,Me in your space/But forget your face, I swear I will/Same mark, same bullet anywhere I chill/
Just bring wit me a pair, I will.”

The chorus is sung again to close the single.

He’s ready to get married. However he’s not sure if she’s on the same page. He tries to gauge her reaction to his sentiments. If she is excited and hugs him, he will assume she is as much in love with him as he is with her.

His hoarse falsetto vocals are sensitive and bared. In previous singles, his falsetto has been polished and cleaned up. It was technically well-done but hollow. The imperfection in it adds a rawness the single wouldn’t have otherwise.

T.I. isn't needed to make the song any better. The original intent was likely to have T.I. appear on the song and have Timberlake benefit from it. However, T.I. it's who has to work to make himself noticed and given the caliber of the single, he didn't put in much effort.

The courtly, house dance arrangement has dainty, nervy beats, expressing Timberlake’s fear that she may say no to his proposal. It’s unbelievable that a) he can pull it off as though the genre were his first love and b) possibly make the sound mainstream. But it’s true – he makes the house genre his home.

The fantastic “My Love” is a challenging step forward for Timberlake.
