Music Review: Paris Hilton "Turn It Up"

Paris Hilton

Turn It Up
Album: Paris
Year: 2006

Men have to be daring and provocative to get noticed by Paris Hilton in the sordid “Turn It Up.”

Gaudy strings and scuzzy drums open the single, setting a grimy tone. In the intro, she says her catchphrase and name drops producer Scott Storch.
“Uh/Yeah/That’s hot/Uh/Yeah/Scott Storch/Yeah.”

In the first verse, she says she wants a guy who will be wild and raucous with her. The gentle touch bores her and it has to be kinky to thrill her.
“Gonna make me scream/Wanna cause a riot/Make a lot of noise/I don't want to be
quiet/When it gets real loud/Make it even louder/Gotta turn me on (uh)/Gotta make me higher.”

In the chorus, she says men have a limited time to please her and need to have experience. He has to be willing to go far sexually and unhibited.
“You gotta know what to do/If you wanna get down/So don't go off too smooth/You're running out of time/Turn it up (Oh)/Turn it up/Turn it up (oh)/Turn it up/Turn it up (Oh)/Turn it up/Turn it up (Oh)/Turn it up.”

In the second verse, she asks him if he can give her the best orgasm she’s ever had or know instinctively what she wants done to her. She says that, of course, he wants to sleep with her.
“Can you make me hot/Make me touch the ceiling/Can you read my mind/Can you gimme that feeling/When I lose my clothes/You like that, don't cha?/Let's get exposed/Cause you know you want to.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, she tells him not to be coy and to head to the restroom with her. She says it’s natural to be out of control and she’s ready.
“ Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!/Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!/Don't play around/Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!/Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!/Let's get it started now/You can get it started/Don't be scared to party/Get up, move your body/It's time to party.”

The chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung again.

At the end, she name drops Scott Storch again and tells her one-stand night stands she expects more.
“Oh, don't be afraid to turn it up/Oh, don't be afraid to turn it up/Scott Storch.”

Paris Hilton believes she is a pop star. She crows about having Storch on her song and her promisicuity. She says her catchphrase, thinking it’s the best thing ever. It’s rather pathetic it’s all she values and has to talk about.

Her spoiled, stuck-up vocals are disturbing and insulting. Her whispery baby talk gives a perverted impression that she’s a child and doesn’t know fully what she’s asking. She’s only interested in superficial aspects of the guy: if he’s good-looking, a hard partier, and wants to sleep with her instantly.

The lushed beats stink of stale beer and body odor. The arrangement slurs and staggers, unable to find its footing.

The vacuous “Turn It Up” serves to highlight the fact that money cannot class or talent.
