Music Review: Brandy "Baby"

Brandy

Baby
Album: Brandy
Year: 1995

Brandy pines for the guy who is next to her locker in the primp “Baby.”

Mannered bass and keyboards open the single, setting an unflappable tone. In the chorus, she says he isn’t aware of his gorgeousness or that he enters her mind as easily as candy.
“Baby baby baby baby/Don't you know that you're so fine/Baby baby baby baby/Think about you all the time.”

In the first verse, she figures she has to tell him sometime. Every day, she has the opportunity to talk to him and make an impression. Her face gets cherry red and she stumbles on her words. She times her way to the locker each day and accidently bumps into him to get his attention. She apologizes for coming across as callous but it’s just an effort to get herself noticed from all the other girls she has to compete with.
“I guess it's time to say baby, baby/How you make me feel/When you come to my mind/I can't keep my cool baby, baby/I can't hold it inside/I can't wait each day just to see you walk/Tryin' to move in close to get to where you are/I'm not trying to be rude baby, baby/Nothing ventured nothing gained/Oh I'm telling you.”

The chorus is sung again.

In the second verse, she says her feelings are beyond a normal crush and she can’t express it properly. She would like them to become more than acquaintance. It would be a storybook romance – they met in high school in between classes, they fell in love, survived the college years, got married in a lavish, romantic ceremony and went on to have two kids. She says they would be great together. She finally was able to talk to him in private and serendes him with a song about her obsession with him.
“Words just ain't enough baby, baby/But that's all I can use to state my intentions/Hope it gets to love baby, baby yeah/It's a perfect situation/Cuz we fit together like a hand in glove/Just to be with you is all I'm thinkin' of/Oh oh yeah/What else can I say baby oh baby/We are alone and i'm singing this song to you.”

The chorus is sung twice.

In the bridge, she whispers that he’s her only goal.
“My darling, oh baby/You're all I'm thinking of now/My darling, oh baby/You're all I need right now/Hey, hey, hey.”

The chorus is sung twice to close the single.

Brandy dated a couple guys in middle school. However, with her current locker buddy, she finds potential for him to be her first real boyfriend. Unlike those junior high relationships, there’s a possibility she could on actual dates and experience the deepness of love. However, serending her crush will end up being one of those moments she wishes she could take back.

Her young, rose-colored vocals are bashful and clean. She’s a teenager discovering what love can be and searching for what she wants. The innonence she has reflects it.

The beats prance and thwack the arrangement, trying to be appear cool as they bump into thick overproduction.

The acceptable “Baby” is a green effort, meant to get Brandy’s name out there.
