Music Review: Belinda Carlisle "Heaven Is A Place On Earth"

Belinda Carlisle

Heaven Is A Place On Earth
Album: Heaven On Earth
Year: 1987

Belinda Carlisle is blissfully in love in her new relationship in the superb “Heaven Is A Place On Earth.”

Immediately, the chorus starts the song. It’s followed by pixiesh percussion and content guitars, setting a swooning tone.
“> “Oh, baby, do you know what that’s worth?/Oh heaven is a place on earth/They say in heaven love comes first/We’ll make heaven a place on earth/Oh heaven is a place on earth.”

In the first verse, she says her day isn’t complete without seeing him. Once she gets out of work, she drives home and changes. Once he arrives to pick her up at 7 p.m., she comes to life again. Everything is brighter whenever he is around. As he greets her, he hugs her and starts dancing with her. Even if there isn’t any music. To feel nuzzling her neck and whispering he loves her delights her like nothinge else could.
“ When the night falls down/I wait for you/And you come around/And the world’s alive/With the sound of kids/On the street outside/When you walk into the room/You pull me close and we start to move/And we’re spinning with the stars above/And you lift me up in a wave of love.”

The chorus is sung again. In it, she says the moments she has with him are priceless. It’s like she has found wonderland in him. Love is the most important thing there. She says they will create their vision of the perfect love in their world.

In the second verse, she turns to him when she needs solace from her problems and he is able to bring her back to her old self. When she feels overwhelmed, he talks to her on the phone, encouraging her that she will succeed and get the job done well. She says people her age are learning how to enjoy life and break from their selves. She thought the challenge of a real love would frighten her and cause her hide. However, she realizes it’s freeing and she wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“When I feel alone/I reach for you/And you bring me home/When I’m lost at sea/I hear your voice/And it carries me/In this world we’re just beginning/To understand the miracle of living/Baby I was afraid before/But I’m not afraid anymore.”

In the bridge, she purrs her life is perfect with him in it.
“Heaven, heaven, heaven.”

The latter half of the second verse is sung again.
“In this world we’re just beginning… But I’m not afraid anymore.”

The content but bombastic guitars have a solo.

The chorus is sung again.

She sings “oh, heaven is a place on earth” about 7 times to close the single.

She is absolutely in love as she has never been before. It was an experience she had always hoped for, but secretly dreaded for fear of it becoming a broken fairytale. However, her current boyfriend appears to be her last. He is everything she has ever wanted. Gentle and loving, no one could ever love as her strongly again.

Carlisle’s soaring, joyous vocals are alive and athletic. The big notes, which seemed out of reach with the Go-Go’s, are executed with great skill.

The triumphant arrangement is explosive and spacious as the rush of love itself.

The lovely single is essential 80s listening.
