Supergirl
Album: Most Wanted
Year: 2006
Hilary Duff claims be the end-all, be-all in her boyfriend’s life in the vinegary “Supergirl.”
A whirring synth and colorless keyboard open the single, setting a controlling tone. In the first verse, she says she knows how to strike a nerve in her boyfriend and get him irritated. Sometimes, she will do it for no reason just to see the angry look on his face. However, when he’s failed an exam he studied hard for, she’s there to tell him he’s smart and offer her help to tutor him. She knows him really well. With a single glance or turn of the mouth, she knows if he’s worried or ecstatic. She had him pegged him as a sweet, adorable guy when she met him. Being an excellent judge of character, she’s right.
In the chorus, she says she’s his hero. If anyone tears him down, she will go after the bully. She knows his every reaction to his situation and is able to fulfill his desires. In another words, she’s a Stepford girlfriend as well.
Duff’s background singers “I ye I” in between the chorus and the next verse.
In the second verse, she says she makes fascinating conversation. She thinks he’s attracted to her charisma, intelligence, and gentle kiss. She’s inspired to be the perfect person and accomplishes whatever she sets her mind to. However, not all credit goes to him, though. She would get what she want, regardless if she was dating him or not.
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she says she get him to stop stressing and grant him more time to get his stuff done. She will make herself the center of his world and he will depend on her. She also will take him traveling and on adventures he never would have the chance to do otherwise.
The chorus is sung twice.
Duff ends the single by saying she’s the ideal.

“Who can make you mad/When you're having a blast/I can, I can/And who can pick you up/When you feelin' like you suck/I can, I can/And who knows what you think/Without you saying anything/I do, I do/Who had you figured out/And never had a doubt/I did, I did.”

“Haven’t you heard?/I'm supergirl/You don’t wanna mess with me/I got your back/I know your every move/And I got everything you'll ever need.”

“I can make you hang/On every single word/Like this, like this/It could be my vibe/Maybe its my mind/Could be my kiss, could be my kiss/But when I'm around you/There’s nothing I can't do/I'm at my best, I'm at my best/Well maybe I'm so good/Cause your standing in the room/You wish, you wish.”

“I got everything.”
She has a high opinion of herself. She thinks her all childish mannerisms are cute and her boyfriend can be manipulated into believing she’s the only girl who can suit him. Impossible expectations do not exist for her. She can be both servant to his every need (which he will enjoy) and be the unthreatening overachiever. According to her, she’s the most wonderful, beautiful person in the world without a flaw. Her huge ego, however, is own her undoing. It undermines every statement she makes about herself, letting her be as ridiculous as she sounds.
Her hubristic vocals are disputative. She expects people to believe her delusions without questioning it. She thinks people will be afraid of her if she gave them a dirty look. However, she has neither the personality nor the range to be effective. She’s all talk and would likely hide if someone responded to one of her lame comebacks.
The militant guitar arrangement and the antangonizing drums drown out any hint of dissent in an obedient, generic way.
“Supergirl” is immensely unlikeable.
