Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)
Album: Control
Year: 1987
Janet Jackson has a long, intimate goodbye with her lover in the stodgy ballad “Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun).”
Sleepy keyboards open the single, setting a canned tone. According to AltaVista, she whispers in French to her boyfriend that she wants to be with him. However, she doesn’t know how or why time fled and she loves him.
In the chorus, she says when she’s with her boyfriend, their time together moves at warp speed. She never gets bored with him.
In the second verse, she once again repeats that time moves fast when she’s with him. Just the moment they have discovered something new about the other, they have to leave another.
In the second chorus, she beckons him that another hour wouldn’t make a difference. He will still get home in time to get enough sleep for work the next day.
In the third verse, she says time is an absolute and they must use it wisely. By the weekend, they will have more hours to spend and can maximize it to their advantage.
In the third verse, she pulls him close to her and pleads with him to let her stay. She can’t bear to be apart from him.
In the bridge, she whispers to him in French again. He insists that she not go home just yet and kisses her cheek. She playfully tells him to stop and she really needs to beat traffic. However, he asks for one last makeout session. As he kisses her neck, she moans in response.
The groggy keyboards slouch and slumber in an unshakeable sleep.
Jackson’s slight vocals are all over the place. Her French is embarrassing and slows down the song even more. However, her spoken parts are believable and well-acted. But due to the arrangement, her sung vocals are robotic.
The dull “Funny How Time Flies” doesn’t go anywhere

Sleepy keyboards open the single, setting a canned tone. According to AltaVista, she whispers in French to her boyfriend that she wants to be with him. However, she doesn’t know how or why time fled and she loves him.
“Il me plait d'etre avec tu/Je ne sais pas ou ou le temps s'est enfui/Oh je t'aime mon cherie.”
In the chorus, she says when she’s with her boyfriend, their time together moves at warp speed. She never gets bored with him.
“Funny how time flies when you're having fun/Oh baby/Funny how time flies when you're having fun (fun)/Oh baby.”
In the second verse, she once again repeats that time moves fast when she’s with him. Just the moment they have discovered something new about the other, they have to leave another.
“I don't know where it all went/Time passed us by/Just when it seemed the fun began/Oh.”
In the second chorus, she beckons him that another hour wouldn’t make a difference. He will still get home in time to get enough sleep for work the next day.
“Funny how time flies when you're having fun, please stay/Funny how time flies (please stay) when you're having fun, mmm.”
In the third verse, she says time is an absolute and they must use it wisely. By the weekend, they will have more hours to spend and can maximize it to their advantage.
“But time never ends/Let's find the time/To get together once again, someday soon.”
In the third verse, she pulls him close to her and pleads with him to let her stay. She can’t bear to be apart from him.
“Funny how time flies when you're having fun, mmm, yeah, whoa/Funny how time flies when you're having fun (fun)/Don't you ever leave (Funny how time flies when you're having fun)/Don't you ever go/Say you love me so (Funny how time flies when you're having fun)/Mmm/Funny how time flies when you're having fun/When you're having fun, yeah, hmhmm/Funny how time flies when you're having fun (fun).”
