Which do you like?

Ok, now most of you know my son is going to be having his first child. He's been told he's expecting a boy. At this point it better be, because I've bought gads of boy's clothes already. JC Penney just had an 80% off clothing sale, because they are moving to another building, and I took full advantage buying little boy's clothes clear until next summer.

The big discussion now is the name. Since my son is an avid movie watcher, and I'm talking big time avid here, he's come up with the name Maximus Ethan . He thinks it's a strong boy's name. How many out there can recognize where these names come from? Another name that came up is Ethan Russell since Russell is a family name . Since my son is going to enroll him in VMI at his birth.....I guess they all do this, he's looking at the way the initials stand out as well. So what do you think? Which do you like? M.E. or E.R?

Maximus Ethan . or
Ethan Russell

maximus is going to be a hard name to live with for a boy.  Ethan Russell sounds very New England old blood.  I vote ER.

no one is going to recognize where ethan comes from movie wise unless they know the full story... maximus I could understand.

Maximus...I like it...but it reminds me of RUSSEL CROW in the Gladiator.

People will end up calling him Max....

I don't like E.R. because it reminds me of a hospital!

Just remember that the kid has to live with his name and deal with other kids. Maximus really sucks in my opinion and will be an unending source of crude jokes and ribbing.

Name the kid Fred and be done with it.

Fred? you must be joking. you know your parents hate you when your name is fred. Just because you had a rough childhood and have no friends doesn't mean a boy named maximus will. A little outside the box thinking from the ordinary and the mundane goes very far in this world. Fred, what a joke. You must either have a sense of humor of your name is fred.

You assume an awful lot here. Perhaps you should confine your comments to what you know as you've obviously not read enough of my articles or comments to know anything at all about me. I am certainly not lacking in friends or a sense of humor.

Since you're so dense, yes dimwit it was a joke. KFC and anyone else who has actually been here long enough to get know people here would recognize that fact. Don't you have a bridge to crawl under?

Sorry to pollute your thread KFC, I just can't stand arrogant, ignorant asshats.

Either name makes the boy sound like a raging faggot. The only good thing to be said about them is he'll learn to fight early. Or spend his days getting his ass kicked.'Maximus Ethan'? That's not very far from 'Giant Dick Joe'.

As for Ethan Russel, it conjures up images of some prissy little kid that spends his time wetting the bed. Why not go the whole hog and ensure the brat's life is a misery from the off - call him 'Maximus Ethan Russel'. Do it, and then he'll have a fighting chance of growing up not just hating you for the idiocy that could propose such ridiculous names, but actively loathing you for it.

ok... for the record "emperorofIcecream" anyone who comes up with a name like that must be complete queerbait or just a corpulent middleaged man who has nothing better to do with his pathetic life then to spend your already insignificant time here typing away with a GRE education. And MasonM well your parents must obviously hate you. You must be adopted, so grow up peterpan, count chocula, why jump to such hostilities.

ok guys, this was not meant to be a .....name calling contest......I only wanted your opinion on baby naming.

And to the anonymous user....Mason is right. He is an ok guy. He does have a sense of humor....Fred was a joke!!! Maybe he should have said...RAMBO instead? Thank you Mason, I actually agree with you. I don't care for Maximus but am ok with Ethan. It goes well with our last name.

And EOIC....here's a first. I actually agree with half of what you said. I'll let you figure out which half. But why would Ethan be as bad as you say? Is Simon better? And it's Russell, not Russel.

Yes, Tova, the name comes from Gladiator....good job. I forgot that the actor was Russell Crowe. I'm surprised he didn't come up with Maximus Russell. He came up with Maximus Ethan. Do you know which movie Ethan represents? Hint, think of our last name. The initials, E.R. also would be a suffix to the last name as well.

Well, that sort of is a name calling contest isn't it?

Again, I apologize for polluting your thread. Obviously someone needs to crawl back under his bridge.

I just did my reaserch, and I found out the MasonM is a ok guy, so your parents didnt adopt you after all. And yes I got the jokes.

But the Emperor, I found out is suffering from some sort of a complex of problems. I'm not sure if it's the name topic, being your name is simon. I must say simon is a winner, and also a top favorite amoungst the gay community. So with that in mind, you are now to be refered to as queerbait, my original name for you. You need help.

I'm going to have to echo mason here. I don't want to get too specific on your thread, but there's a word association with maximus that could lead to some unpleasant moments for your grandson. I'd go with E.R. MUCH safer.

there's nothing gayer than enrolling a son named maxy in a college that is 95% guys

I know a child named Joshua Brody Maximus *last name*. Poor kid.

The thing about "strong" names is that sometimes it seems too obvious and too desperate. There's something to be said for subtlety.

Let me ask you this: Do you think children become their names? Do they grow up to be the kind of person we've named them?

What kind of kid, and what kind of man, would a Maximus Ethan or an Ethan Russell be?

What would his traits be?

Anyways, I think Max is a good name for a little boy, but I could see a child wanting to keep the "Maximus" thing on the down-low.

Ethan Russell is nice.

The concern over having "impressive" initials doesn't make any sense to me. So long as his initials don't spell out P.I.G. or D.U.D. or something like that, I think the kid will be ok.

Now that would show parents with a sense of humor

What about poor Dick Trickle's parents' choice of a name? Poor kid.

hmmmm initials would be D.T......well that's better than E.T. .

Geeeesh TW.....lots of questions...... Do I have to answer them?

the initials came into play because of the VMI connection. I guess they spell their last name and then go by their two initials.

so if your last name was Pickle and your name was Matthew Edward, your handle would be Pickle. M.E. So Pickle Me would be a problem. So they have to think like that. I don't know how many other people out there enroll their kids in college at birth but it's pretty common at these military colleges. My son is already talking of enrolling this baby in the class of 2029.

So with our last name the initials E.R and M.E do spell interesting names that could stick.

heck maybe we should name him Sue and introduce him to Johnny Cash.

I don't know the Ethan movie reference....

Ethan - wasn't that Tom Cruises characters name in the MI movies?

I like names that flow so 2-3 syllables followed by 1 syllable - eg Elana Grace, Elliot Kim, Patrick James, Elizabeth Kate

Maximus James/John/Pete/Tom

Congratulations on your grandbaby!
