Dead Or Alive

You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
Album: Youthquake
Year: 1984

Pete Burns pursues a man to make his lover in the unhibited “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record).”

Shimmering synths open the single, setting a strong-willed tone. In the first verse, Burns sees the man laughing and doing a silly dance. He smiles to himself, wondering what his name is and how he could reach him. He likes his outgoing personality and wants to go out with him sometime. There is no else he’s intereseted and he’s not going to settle for anyone else. He will cross the line to get to him, if he has to.
“If I, I get to know your name/Well if I, could trace your private number, baby/All I know is that to me/You look like you're lots of fun/Open up your lovin' arms/I want some, want some/I set my sights on you (And no one else will do)/And I, I've got to have my way now, baby.”

In the pre-chorus, he gives the guy a silent warning to be prepared for him.
“All I know is that to me/
You look like you're having fun/Open up your lovin' arms/Watch out here I come.”

In the chorus, he says he’s off-balanced by his feelings for him and it’s a sensation he enjoys.
“You spin me right round, baby/Right round like a record, baby/Right round round round/You spin me right round, baby/Right round like a record, baby/Right round round round.”

In the second verse, he has befriended him. They’ve become close and all Burns has to do is wait for the right moment. Then, the man will be his.
“I got to be your friend now, baby/And I would like to move in just a little bit closer.”

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, Burns bellows that being together with him is all that matters.
“I want your love/I want your love.”

The pre-chorus, chorus and bridge are sung again.

The chorus is sung twice to close the song.

Burns had secretly liked men but didn’t have the courage to start a relationship. He spent time with them, never letting them in on his crushes for them. But once he sees a vivacioius man hanging out at the club, he realizes he must make that attempt or face being uncomfortable in his own skin for a lifetime.

Burns’ wolfish vocals are insistent and rapturous. As self-assured as he tries to be, he's lovesick. He’s so close to having him but isn’t sure of what the man’s reaction will be.

The synths twinkle, illuminating the optimism as the charging drums reflect the driving need to tell the guy he’s in love with him.

The androgynous “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” is an unforgettable pop song.
