Music Review: Justin Timberlake "SexyBack"

Justin Timberlake

SexyBack
Album: FutureSex/LoveSounds
Year: 2006

Justin Timberlake can’t get enough of rough sex in the kinky “SexyBack.”

Cocky electro beats open the single, setting a swaggering tone. In the first verse, he declares that unlike the other guys at the club, he’s not all talk. He’s drawn to another girl chatting with her friends. He takes her hand, leading her away into somewhere private. He touches the small of her back and whispers for her to disrobe. Producer Timbaland announces the bridge is next.
“I’m bringing sexy back (yeah!)/Them other boys don’t know how to act (yeah!)/I think you’re special, what’s behind your back (yeah!)/So turn around and I’ll pick up the slack (yeah!)/Take em’ to the bridge.”

In the bridge, he says he’s helpless against wanting her. She likes the darker side of the sexuality as much as he does. He can only obey her every command. He teases that if he goes too far, they can engage in S&M. Timbaland directs him to start the chorus.
“Dirty babe/
You see these shackles/Baby I’m your slave/I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave/It’s just that no one makes me feel this way/Take em' to the chorus.”

In the chorus, he tells the girl to have fun with herself and to be as naughty as she wants.
“Come here girl/Go ahead, be gone with it/Come to the back/Go ahead, be gone with it/VIP/Go ahead, be gone with it/Drinks on me/Go ahead, be gone with it/Let me see what you’re working with/Go ahead, be gone with it/Look at those hips/Go ahead, be gone with it/You make me smile/Go ahead, be gone with it/Go ahead child
Go ahead, be gone with it/And get your sexy on/Go ahead, be gone with it/Get your sexy on/Go ahead, be gone with it/Get your sexy on/Go ahead, be gone with it/Get your sexy on/Go ahead, be gone with it/Get your sexy on/Go ahead, be gone with it/Get your sexy on/Go ahead, be gone with it/Get your sexy on.”

In the second verse, he adds that he can teach her some positions. He cannot wait for her learn and has sex with her.
“I’m bringing sexy back/Them other fuckers don’t know how to act/Come let me make up for the things you lack/Cause your burning up I gotta get it fast/Take em’ to the bridge.”

The bridge and chorus are sung again.

People ask “you ready, you ready?” during a short, funky keyboard solo.

In the third verse, he tells other guys that he can steal their girlfriends whenever he chooses. She’ll be giving in too him without any resistance.
“I’m bringing sexy back/You motherfuckers watch how I attack/If that’s your girl you better watch your back/Cause she’ll burn it up for me and that’s a fact/Take em’ to the chorus.”

The chorus is sung again.

The funky keyboard solo ends the single.

In the early 90s, “SexyBack” would’ve been banned and Timberlake’s career would be severely damaged. But the single is still a risk, though. Dance music, historically, doesn’t do well in the United States. As a fan of electro, it’s great to see a record company take the chance.

Timberlake’s raunchy, sweaty vocals are unrepentant of the messy sex he’s having. He knows what he wants and grabs it. The vocal distortion is disconcerting, providing the shock the once squeaky clean Mousekeeter is talking about S&M.

Producer Timbaland’s experimental beats slide and skim over the steamy electro arrangement.

The thrilling “SexyBack” is an invigorating listen.
