If your military is strong, you can go to war and then sue for peace, if you don't mind losing whatever trade you have going with the Yor.

It sounds like your problem is one of ethics. I advise you to pick between the following two guiding principles:
(a) Killing billions of aliens is Wrong
(b) It's only a game
Once you've decided which one you're going for, there will be no more ethical dilemmas, just practical ones.

Techie: MD's point is good. Another approach is to set whatever limits you enjoy on your in-game conduct. You can choose to never initiate war, or you can be a ruthless warmonger, or you can practice situational ethics. You can follow the guidelines of Realms Beyond, avoiding exploits (among many other things, and in fact their guidelines might be ideal for your inclinations). You can follow the Iron Man rules, if you yourself are sufficiently masochistic. Or you can take the position that if the game allows it, it's fair to use it, exploiting any game bug or feature.

Now, on a "practical" note, if you never make an alliance your allies can never drag you into a war. OTOH, you can accept this possibility as a challenge and try to gain an alliance victory with more than one ally.

This probably isn't the "right"-way but you could break the Alliance and have the Drengin and the your fighting each other while you grow stronger and then overtake both of them

Technician, I'm guessing you are from eastern Canada with an attitude like that or is there some actual game mechanic that will change your morality rating if you never go to war?

This is how I played it.

Broken the Alliance.

Watched them go to War with each other.

In the mean time I was building cultural loaded star bases in and near their systems. Watched their systems weaken an flip to humanity.

Was not very nice but at least I did not have to go to War.

Not exactly. When it comes down to points, Military Conquest is the way to go, but that can be achieved by largely non-military means. If all the planets are yours, you have a Military Conquest even if you never fired a shot, culture-flipping the lot of them. This can be achieved by turning off "Culture Victory" but of course that can be seen as an exploit. I leave all victory conditions on, but you can achieve the same by "limited war," by which that if you are "in danger" of winning by culture, zap something to place yourself "At War." This blocks a culture victory but culture flipping continues, and you need not fire another shot, except when AI warships come calling. Of course I have gotten culture wins accidentally when the war ends (last planet flips); the war suspends the culture countdown, but does not reset it.

Mind you, I think the culture win is worth 90% of the points of a military win (then alliance is 10% less, then tech is 10% less than that). So if you want to maximize your score you go for a military win. If that isn't as important to you, feel free to win by whatever means you enjoy. [I find that the tech win is the hardest to get, but it has the least value. I think that scoring penalty is a Bad Thing. If you're a physicist, I'm sure you agree!] -- HtL
