Click the link below for a preview of Sword of the Stars, an upcoming space 4X game.

It looks interesting. Browsing the screenshots, I liked the fact they are using real star names (e.g. Castor, Betelgeuse) with the actual star colors. The game does offer real-time space combat but besides this it seems like a lighter version of GalCiv2 and might attract those who found GalCiv2 to be too daunting. I forsee however that the hardcore will stay loyal to GalCiv2 for quite some time to come!

One thing that it has that GalCiv2 lacks is tactical combat. For some, that is a boon. For others, a bane. I personally prefer tactical combat in 4X games, so I hope SotS can really pull of blending the strategic part with the tactical combat. Looks promising.

It does however present an idea that makes me look at Galciv2 in a kinda, "why can't you do that hun?" kind of way. All species in the game use different forms of FTL-travel, terrans play around with subspace while the whatyacallem insects have to travel with a stargate to a new system before FTL becomes avilable. One of the races makes light eat dust and do FTL in normal space! Oh the tactics! Oh the Strategy!!

After you figure out how to beat the Tactical A.I after a few days, there seems little else the game has to offer.

If the tactical system in Sword of the Stars is strong, there may not be need for Galactic Civ to have tactical combat that I've voted for to be in the 3rd one. This way Stardock could concentrate on the new features that'll make the Gal Civ franchise unique from the predecessors and other games of this genre.

One thing in SotS that is neat is the random tech tree. The tech that you liked in one game that is the AI-killer may not be available in the next game. The comic book artstyle is interesting too.

Though I'll get Dark Avatar before the Sword of the Stars

the game seems interesting. Also it will be much more appealing to the people who want to just get in the game and blow stuff up, which on occasion I am one.
I wonder why they didnt mention GCII in thier review? oh well. I will buy it, but GCII will remain my space empire game, that game will become my blow things up in space game.

Pretty bold statement, ashberry, so you stopped playing gc2 now you cracked it?

I'm quite looking forward to sword of the stars, The Tak element will hopefully be good and maybe they'll get the strategic side to be deep and engaging. good luck kerboros!

I've been following this game for a while now; it looks promising. I won't be getting it, however, because of two things:

1.) Only 4 races. Not much replayability there, even if their gameplay styles will be different.

2.) No ground invasions. You can only take over a world by completely destroying its population and sending in one of your own colony ships. I realize that probably won't bother most people, but for me it's a complete turn-off.

Fortunately, I don't think I'll grow tired of GalCiv 2 anytime soon.

Looks like a good simple game. I look forward to it.

Oh, wait. I don't think it will run well on my computer. Dang!

I'll get it. It looks to have amore in common with the Total War series than the GC, or MOO series. I, being a fan of the total war series will probably like it, and if the reviews are not bad, I will buy for sure.

Some of the space images seem to be reminiscent of HW2. I like that.
