How much SPAM do you get because of JU?

Is it just me?

I can't believe how much SPAM I've gotten just from signing up for JU. I created a new account at Yahoo! for this blog and then bingo bango - I got mail. Lots of it. Tons of it. Tons of junk.

How about you?

No noticable increase here. Maybe yahoo email accounts get targeted because . . . it's yahoo.

None.

I'd suggest it's a result of Yahoo, not JU.

I know when I create a new account at any of those freebie sites the box is immediately filled with SPAM.

None. Since I don't believe Stardock distributes mailing lists, the only way to get spam from having a blog here is if you post your email address in your articles or on the sidebar.

Yahoo gets directory harvest attacks constantly (randomly generate every possible username you can, send mail until you don't get a bounce-back message. Those that don't bounce are valid and you target them with more spam). So the problem is most likely Yahoo itself.

None at all.

Yahoo will be the reason, not JU...

I guess I've been very lucky then. My original Yahoo! account is over 10 years old and I hardly get any SPAM at all.

Hey! What kind of person do you think I am? I made it through in the honest and legal way.

I have to say though, I was getting those same database messages for over a month before I got my account working. I tried getting some support through e-mail. I never got any response but hey - it's free - and these people work for a living.

I didn't happen to think of a conspiracy theory. I guess I'm not paranoid.

What's to complain about? Not happy? Go somewhere else.

Hey ther.

I use GMail (googlemail), it has wonderful SPAM filters and it's got almost 3000MB of mailbox space.

If you want an invitation to GMail, e-mail me at [email protected]

Alternatively get Mozilla's Thunderbird (skinnable) e-mail application which also has excellent SPAM filters. [link="http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/"]http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/">Link

been here 18 months or so, and no spam... could it be that I am Jewish and spam is not kosher? heh

Oh, but you should have....should be! Just ask 'one' who is and he'll tell you JU susses out peoples political/social views and keeps moving the goal posts if they don't measure up just right.....guess you were very lucky to eventually get in

Seriously though, Yahoo would be the culprit behind your spam increase, not JU. I no longer use Yahoo mail for that very reason over a year ago...too much unsolicited spam just from using my yahoo email addy when registering software or my membership at various sites, etc....

These days I only use Hotmail for my web based email provider, and I very rarely get spam in my inbox, in part because of the spam filters, but I think also because Hotmail more actively seeks to prevent it entering the system by data matching user reports against incoming mail to their server....well that's how it was explained to me, and that Yahoo is not so vigilant.

I have a yahoo email account. I get about 100 spam mails per hour...24 hours a day... 7 days a week....forever.

Or maybe you triggered Stardock's new "liberal detection" software!

Oh, man! You mean my attack on the conservative position towards Gitmo will get me more spam? NOW you tell me!

But seriously, you only see a spam increase because JU is based in Nigeria. We're all Nigerians, and it is such a blessed relief to see an American because we've all been spamming each other with precious little results, being, as we are, Nigerian. Now can you please send me all of your alternate email addresses as well as those in your address book so that I can meet my quota and Gene Nash won't give me more lashes for failing to meet my quota for the day?

Spam isn't kosher? First I've heard of it!

I use both Yahoo and Hotmail and my Hotmail is spammed to the gills,  and Yahoo nada!  my kid says Hotmail always spams people,  and that's sure my experience.

I did have my email addy,  not in the sidebar however it could be found if someone clicked on "my journal"  which is no longer there.  THAT could be the culprit....

or else???

Its really hard to say sometimes why someone gets so much spam. I've heard that Yahoo is notorious for spam...so I've never used it...I've also heard that Hotmail is guilty as well...but I have a Hotmail account through MSN and I never get spam. I'm pretty much spam free. One thing I do though is... if for whatever reason a site wants my email address...I just make up a throw away address to use and then wait and see what happens...if it starts getting spammed I just delete it...no more spam...if it doesn't...I can always go back and change it. And if I ever need to give my address to someone here I never type it out using the @ symbol if its going to be posted somewhere. It may be a pain in the butt for someone...but I don't get my address harvested by the spam bots.

In the end, if you are careful about everything else, the main thing that is going to cause you to get spam is the name you use for the account. People make that argument about not getting spam on one account and getting tons on another, but never realize that one account is [email protected] and [email protected] is the other.

When they shoot for email addies randomly it works like passwords. I get nothing on one account, and one that is name based gets tons, even though I have never, ever signed up for anything with the name based one. I just know that once they have the domain name, they start grinding out emails to random names hoping to hit. It goes doubly for using your first initial and your last name, as I found out to my dismay.

If you give your email addy to Apple you will get spammed to death. or at least a coma.

No spam from either - about 8 spam in yahoo a week. But I guess I dont qualify for the " Viagra " ads

I have some spares you can have...if you're feeling left out....

Er....'ads', not 'Viagra'....

Nor the 'longjohntiddlywhacker' enlargement ads? Crikey, even my mother and sister get those from time to time, as well as....like they're discontented/malcontented house wives or something.

Starting to feel forgotten and like a lost cause here....neglected, even. Haven't received a Viagra or 'thingwybob' enlargement ad in ages now....tho I'm perplexed as to why I occasionally got offers, when using Yahoo mail, for free membership to gay & lesbian sites. Maybe their email scanners latched on to a reference I once made to Robin Hood and his 'merry' men visiting 'gay' Paris~ to see 'Les Girls'

In any event, internet advertising can be quite sordid and invasive...second guessing peoples sexual orientation/needs and sending them unsolicited filth to generate/boost sales.

I get a whole heck of a lot of spam on the e-mail account I used for Joe User, but I don't know if that is why. I don't get much spam on any of my other accounts though, so it is possible I guess.
