It Doesn't Pay To Plan

I delivered the Bushmaster to Camp Pendleton fairly early this morning. I actually arrived too early and had to wait around a while for the Gunny Sgt to come on duty. I called in after delivery to let them know that it was delivered on time. I was planning to go find a room after that.
Instead I was told that they have a piece of machinery they want me to pick up in Corona, CA to bring back to IL on my way. And of course it needs a tarp. Grrrr. So I called the guy in Corona to get directions and he starts bitching at me that it was supposed to be picked up yesterday. I calmy replied that I didn't know anything about that and if he wanted it picked up he needed to stop bitching and give me some directions.
He gave me the directions and then informed me that he had to go to an auction and he "would try" to be back around 1PM. So, I called dispatch and let them know what was going on and that the guy didn't seem too sure when he'd be there and I wasn't about to go there and sit around waiting for him to decide to show up. I believe the word asshole may have come up once or twice.
So now I'm parked at the truckstop in the shithole of California, Ontario, waiting for a call from dispatch to let me know the guy is there again. Personally, I hope the jerk doesn't show at all. It's already a quarter past 1:00. I really didn't want to have to tarp the damn thing anyway. Handling those heavy tarps really kills my bad hip.
So now instead of a nice comfy hotel room I guess I'll be spending the night in this lot lizard, drug dealer, scum infested parking lot. So much for the best laid plans.
On a positive note, I got a call from the rep at Oshkosh truck a little while ago. He was at Camp Pendleton and calling to find out when I was going to deliver the Bushmaster. I laughed and told him that I had delivered it early this morning, probably while he was still in his hotel room snoozing. He seemed quite pleased and thanked me for the excellent service.
He began to discuss the pick up time tomorrow and I let him know that I had already worked all of that out with the Gunny Sgt this morning. He was again pleased and said he could have just stayed in Wisconsin as we didn't seem to need him at all.
He said he'd make sure my boss knew of the superior service.
