A question for the Aussies

Is there a nice bloke out there to help me out, pretty please?

A friend of mine needs to know what kind of power (AC) is there in Australia. I dont think it's the same as in Europe, but never know... He's from Costa Rica and has to go to Australia for a meeting but needs to know if he needs a converter for his laptop, I guess it goes by the american standards...

If anyone knows please help.

Thanks!

It's pretty much the same as (most of) Europe 240VAC/50Hz. If it's a reasonably modern computer power pack it should run on pretty much anything between 100V-250V. It'll be listed on the pack itself somewhere...

The main thing he'll need is a plug adapter because we have unique 'angled-flat-prong' types / \ that no-one else (except maybe NZ) uses!

As Chris has mentioned.  'Heavier drain' componentry makes use of a third terminal...a wired 'earth', unlike some parts of the world...though 240VAC can pickle your testicles quite well with or without it...  Important difference to other parts of the world is the Active and Neutral are bladed and canted at an angle to each other ...but the adapters to suit are universal...

Chris, thanks for all the info. Yeah they use those plugs in Vanuatu as well So he just needs a plug adapter? His computer wont burn if he plugs it in an Australian plug??? lol!

though 240VAC can pickle your testicles quite well with or without it...

If it only pickles testicles then I'm safe

Thanks Jafo!

Yep....and we progressed from horse drawn vehicles about a century ago as well.

I suppose OZ is still primitive in one respect, tho....alot of our cooking is done on an open fire outside. "Oi, Blue, chuck another shrimp on the barbie, will ya."

Ah, the Oz barbie - fried witchety grub, toasted brown snake, Aborigine steaks and the odd smouldering baggy green cap. Makes you wish you were there...

God how I wish I could get VB in the US. Fosters won't allow them to import it. Probably afraid us yanks will discover what real Aussie bee tastes like. They'ld never sell another can of the Fosters swill if we could get VB!

Just cos lil Johnny and his cronies allowed and tried to cover up the 'children overboard' saga, it doesn't mean we're all uncivilised savages. Most of us enjoy a slab of bbqed beef, lavishley garnished with onions, steak seasoning.

And the only 'smouldering' baggy green cap you'll see will be the one that's doing 22 yards in .01 of a second when we win back The Ashes.

And BTW....not only are witchety grubs delicious, they're highly nutritious and a delicacy....Yummmm!!!

VB is the mst consumed beer i Oz, not Foster as everyone may assume...

No-one really relates shrimps with barbies....the latter is all about knocking the horns off a cow, wiping its bum and burning it within an inch of its 'life' and eating it...with or without tomato sauce...

I'm Australian...and I'm also Australian living overseas from the rest of the world, ie in Australia [existentialist thing, that] and can make fun of Aussies in an American accent....  does that count?...

and can make fun of Aussies in an American accent....

Same here....also in a variety of English accents, Irish, Welsh, Scots, French, Italian, Pakistani & Indian.....'Anybody want to buy an elephant?'

Can't do it so well in an Aussie accent, tho....still got a bit of a pommie twang, 36 years later.

Really? I know people drink it, but I always assumed it was cos it was cheap! I like Tooheys New a lot better, and if I can afford it I'd go for Crownies or Boags any day.

Ah...so you like the Boags, eh? Pretty cheap down my way (Launceston), but when I went back up to Qld for a while, it was cheaper there than here. On the other hand, I could buy the Powers Ice cheaper here than there...go figure

There was a time when I'd drink any amber liquid that began with B and ended with ER ....tho I used to think VB tasted like N.T. camel p!ss, it sufficed as a stop gap when all else was dry.

Haven't touched a drop in 3 years or more now....gave up: benifits of abstinence = 3.5 grand worth of puter gear/proggies I'd otherwise not have....

....still wake up with a hangover every day, tho....acquired beer gut still hangs over my waistband.

Pommies will always be pommies, hehe

cactoblasta, I love tha taste of it, lol! Of course our local beer is better, but VB has always been sweet right after kava, hehe! Have tasted Toohey but didnt think much of it, but true that lots of aussies make a big fuss about it, lol!

Ok, if I read this right, Australia is the same as Europe.  DC.  Which you can get DC to AC converters, but they never work exactly right.  So back up your equipment!!!!!! (Been there, done that, lost it too!).  And all the jokes aside (great ones blokes!  Thanks for the laughs!)....

if he is worried about a laptop, get the converter and dont worry.  He will fry his battery at worse.  And those are cheap. If it is more than that, BUY insurance!

And I am especially happy to see that our Aussie brothers and sisters have progressed beyond "bear skins and stone knives".  And if you need a translation, wait for Dynamaso.  He can do that one in his sleep!

I think you may have this confused! All our mains outlets are AC 240V,50Hz although I've heard that Australia may eventually follow the European standard of 230VAC,50Hz.

The wall sockets look like this: http://www.dse.com.au/isroot/dse/images/products/m7032.jpg

The laptop power supply (if it's less than ~5 years old) should be able to deal with a wide range of input voltages eg my 2yo Toshiba plugpack can deal with 100-240V @ 50-60Hz so it's only neccessary to adapt the plug to the local sockets.

Yeah they use those plugs in Vanuatu as well So he just needs a plug adapter? His computer wont burn if he plugs it in an Australian plug??? lol!

She'll be right!

Re fav Oz beer: A cold Coopers rolled (on it's side) down an ironbark slab bar somewhere off the Birdsville track (*sigh*, ahhh...)
