You are naive if you are worried about the government!  They got more problems than your corns!  The simple truth is that your life is already an open book!  And the ID thieves have got you dead to rights.  The only reason you have not been hijacked is that you are not interesting enoigh yet.

Worry about the fricking government?  After I am dead maybe!  The sad fact that so many area 51 nuts fail to realize is that there is TOO much information for anyone to give a diddly damn about unless they have a reason to care. 

Do you?  Does the government have a reason to care about you?  Dont be so egotistical.  The real fact is that they will never see, care about or use the info.

Who will?  ID theives and Terrorists.  And you know what?  The government cannot protect you!  Shock!  Horror!  Outrage!

If the government was actively spying on me and collecting all the voodoo stufff that is alleged (and totally bogus), Maybe I would be concerned.  But all that is happening is massive amounts of random data is being fed into a database that no one will see except when Ahmed decides to fly a plane into the Sears tower.  Maybe the information will be in time.  Between you me and the fence post, I doubt it.  TMI

I have to agree with you on this one. If some of these folks had the slightest idea of the shear volume of data involved they might begin to understand just how stupid it is to think there is even the most remote chance that anyone will ever actually see anything related to them at all.

But I'm wearing my tinfoil hat just in case.

Actually there is great danger of abuse. If the government gets big enough to start making sense of the data. SOme dont realize that and demand the government do just that under the guise of the welfare state.  Most people already give the government far more information willingly now, than the government can mine on them in the public domain.

My Hope is they never have to, or worry about the government getting big enough to worry about it.  As long as we keep a tight rein on the size of the government, that wont happen.  It does require eternal vigilance, but moderated with some realism thrown in as well.

History certainly shows that governments have always used data mining and wire tapping appropriately.

It is necessary for the government to have data on ALL of us. Lest one of us slips through.

I'm pondering some potential "good" uses here:

Tracking down terrorists and those who support them. - Hey, who could argue this?
Tracking down criminals and child molesters - Again, who could argue?
Tracking down anyone associated with anything that you don't like. - Abortionists and their clients
- Homosexuals
- People of opposing political parties
- Yankees fans
- People named "Steve" - They've been trying to take over- Get with it!
- Commies - Some of us have long memories >
- People with Aids
- The guy who cut you off in traffic yesterday
- and so on.

Then, the fun part! You can destroy their insignificant lives if you so choose!

Really, there is nothing at all to worry about. These people have and, always will be the clear enemy. Well, them and some others. Of course then there are also those who may piss us off in the future. This list will need to remain flexible.

As far as the recent incident resulting in millions of files of US veterans being stolen from a government employees residence? Please, it was probably just some robbers that don't even know what they got! Really! Look, why else would we wait 2 weeks to disclose what happened? There was and is nothing to worry about.

If it were terrorists looking for ways to hit us, it probably would have already happened. And even if Usama has your information, don't be so arrogant as to think he really cares about you or your family. What would a terrorist or another foreign enemy do with such information? That's right folks! Nothing. They probably don't know a harddrive from a turban. No worries chap!

If it helps you feel any better.....this was not the only house broken into in the neighborhood. Although they didn't seem to take anything, they DID break in. These must be real idiots. They broke into 2 houses, and all they managed to get was a computer and associated media! How smart can these boobs be?

Your sarcasm is duly noted and appreciated.  But as I have said, the danger is allowing the government to get big enough to make use of the data that is readily available for mining.  The collection is secondary since the data already exists and can be mined by unscrupulous people now.  We cannot control the collection of the data, only its usage or mis-usage as the case may be.

And for the record, it is I-95 around here, and I have a mercedes, not a beamer.

Honestly, I'm among those who is inclined to give Bush and the NSA the benefit of being innocent until proven guilty. But you are assuming that only the federal government would use such information.

What are we going to do when county judges start using their connections to get access to this information to harass political opponents, or families falsely accused of abuse/neglect, etc? If it were just the federal government we had to worry about, you're right. Most of us are far too insignificant for the government to worry about. But it could go farther...MUCH farther.

It's not an "area 51" thing, dr. It's something that, sadly, happens in too many areas. We don't need to give corrupt local and county government officials MORE tools to harass people they don't like.

I agree with you totally.  Yet normally the local and county governments do not have the capacity to do any data mining.  That is why BIG government scares me more.  And yes, I have already been harassed by the local government over the education of one of my children.  That is why we home schooled him and put him in private school.  However they did not use data mining, just old fashion tailing.

See, and my concern actually revolves around the following scenario (or rough equivalents): County judge is told to "get dirt on someone", calls homeland security and tells them they've had a few calls on suspicious behaviour, could they check it out? Homeland security jumps, checks data mined material, local law enforcement officials are looking over their shoulders, taking mental notes. Eventually, Homeland security says "nothing to worry about", but county judge walks away with a list of leads without having to tail you in a big black car to get them.

There are a lot of other potential scenarios, but you get the picture. As long as the activity is conducted in total secrecy, we'll never know, will we?
