Music Review: DJ Sammy "Sunlight"

Sunlight
Album: Heaven
Year: 2003

Yanou has her spirits raised by her lover in the mesmerizing "Sunlight."

The sound of water splashing to the shore opens the single, setting a serene tone. In the first verse, she floats as he wakes her up with a bright smile. As she the tears run down her face, he strokes her hair and pulls her close to him.
"Sunlight/I'm drifting away somehow by the presence of the morning sun/I'm falling into the night/As I can see you shining bright/Sunlight."

An aggressive synth has a solo.

The first verse is sung twice.

Uplifting synths accompany a breathless Yanou as she basks in the rays of his smile.
"Sunlight/Sunlight."

In the second verse, she says his affection enlivens her. His smile shows off his cheekbones and the crease in his jaw.
"Sunlight/There's nothing like your warm embrace/It feels so right/Shining on your sculptured face/Sunlight/Sunlight/There's nothing like your warm embrace/It feels so right/Shining on your sculptured face."

The chorus is once to close the song.

Dance music is dependent on repetition. Whether the lyrics are pounded, broken apart, or slammed, it eventually leads to the first major and final grand beat. It's meant to create energy and excitement (like in remixes) or sustain a mood. "Sunlight" is the latter and succeeds.

The quiet trance arrangement is gauzy and streaming. The notes rise slowly without any pretense. If the morning on on the oceanfront had a soundtrack, the single would be played.

Yanou's rhapsodic vocals marvel for having the chance to love. It's unlike she ever imagined and everything she heard it would be.

The wondrous "Sunlight" is beautiful (but highly commercialized) trance.
