There's The Girl
Album: Bad Animals
Year: 1987
Ann Wilson aches her brokenhearted friend in the candid "There'sThe Girl."
Delicate guitars open the single, setting a warm-hearted tone. In the first verse, she tells him he's a great man. He has a decent job, a nice home and is close with his parents. But he's missing the last part of the dream – a family. He was engaged to a woman a couple years ago but she changed her mind. Once he sees the woman he currently admires walk by, his gaze is fixed on her.
In the chorus, she points how the woman is hanging onto a sleazy guy. He says he doesn't like the woman. But she knows he's lying.
In the second verse, she consoles him. She tells him he should have a woman who will appreciate him and not lead him on. Nonetheless, he thinks he did something wrong for her to not return his feelings.
In the second chorus, she says he is unable to get over her. He's a mess.
In the bridge, he tells her the woman is a distant memory and nothing to get worked up about. She tells him it's all right to be upset about losing her.
The second chorus is sung again.
In the final section, she shakes her head as the woman passes by them.
Wilson sees through her friend's blithe demeanor. He may be saying that he's glad he dodged the bullet. However, no one but her knows he doesn't really mean it. She had watched him pine for her and encouraged him to make the first move. When he asked the woman out on a date, she congratulated him and was excited for him. Then, she found out that the woman had cancelled the date but kept hanging onto her friend, treating him like a backup. She tried to tell him but it was too late. He had his hopes up. Then, a week ago, the woman dropped him completely without so much as a phone call.
Her ethereal vocals are sympathetic to his misery. However, she has to be frank with him in order to help him move on. Her vocals take on almost glass-like quality.
The lacy arrangement blossoms with delicacy and is careful not cause any harm.
"There's The Girl" reveals a softer side of Heart.
