Music Review: Pseudo Echo "Living In A Dream"

Living In A Dream
Album: Love An Adventure
Year: 1986

Brian Canham can't discern reality from fantasy anymore in the inflated "Living In A Dream."

A contriving guitar opens the single, setting a paranoid tone. In the first verse, he is in a room with a pale blue yellow it circling it. He stares at the walls, which grow taller by the minute. He watches as they become crooked and begin to sway. Afraid it's going to topple him, he sits tightly in the corner, his knees trembling. He's praying it's a nightmare he's having and not that he's imprisoned somewhere.
"Walking in a strange light, looking at the walls/The walls are getting higher and I think they're gonna fall/They're gonna fall down over me, crush me till I scream/ Now I'm only hoping that I'm living in a dream."

In the chorus, he reassures himself the images he sees are an illusion.
"It's just a dream/It's just a dream."

In the second verse, he sees someone spying him, observing his actions. He believes it's not the government but a monster. He is no longer sure it's a nightmare.
"Fear lies over me, I feel it all around/Something's looking at me and I think it's got a crown/It's not a king or a queen but something in between/Now I'm only hoping that I'm living in a dream."

The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he convinces himself it's not really happening. He mentions confusion blurs the senses.
“It'sstrange how things seem to be different/When you're living in a dream/It's strange how things seem to be different/When you're living in a dream."

In the third verse, he says seeing people tortured and pleading for lives is usually shown on news. However, he's far away from it and still experience the shock of viewing it. People think dreams are an escape. But there's a darker side of themselves that usually is revealed.
"Wars and violence here happen every day/But I'm in another world a million miles away/It's just like real life, true life, living in a dream/But everything is better then, or that's the way it seems."

The chorus is sung again.

The bridge is sung three times.

The chorus is sung again.

A flamboyant synth solo follows for about nearly a minute.

The bridge is sung four times.

Canham ends the single by saying "living in a dream" three times.

Canham believes dreams are an extension of people. His dreams are often full of danger and harm, which he is exposed to everyday. It thinks eventually his nightmare will come true. However, it's humorous in its attempt to be scary.

His pompous, quick vocals blow off his dream. It's only something that happened and passed. However, he wants people to take pity on him and lend an ear.

The swollen arrangement blows up the notes, exploding with rotted cheese.

The shoddy "Living In A Dream" is truly lurid.
